Kim is a genius for playing on the fears of a large but largely ignored audience - housewives. What he produces here is a gripping, breathtaking andd truly memorable experience. To achieve this, Kim constructs a claustrophobic environment where his camera often glides into narrow spaces with no escape and employs very dramatic music throughout. One can mock the film as excessively dramatic, but only through this is Kim truly able to reach in and toying with our deepest psychosexual fears.

The best movie about adultery I've ever seen. I cannot decide if it's more Sirk or Hitchcock, but either way, it's equal measure absurd and suspenseful. These characters - including the children! - are some of the cruelest people on celluloid, but the movie is the better for it.

Watched it at www.mubi.com Take-home message: Stay away from needy people. It had a promising start but then the behaviour and reasoning of the characters started to fly past me. Elements of a good film was there but they didn't mesh somehow and boy 60s Korea was conservative or what? The toll for a one nightstand: 3 dead people and a stabbing.

Carries a rep as one of the all-time greatest Korean films. I haven't seen enough Korean cinema to pass judgment myself, but I'd be surprised if it weren't in the ballpark. The story somewhat anticipates The Servant and the roving camera perfectly captures the trap the family patriarch has unwittingly laid for himself. The house becomes a prison. Not sure what to make of the goofy ending though.

I really enjoyed this old Korean film. It was a lot darker and more risqué than I had expected. It was really well-directed. It had some very nice shots and some awesome camera movements. It was a bit silly at times because it was quite melodramatic. Especially in the performances and the score. I don’t think I liked the ending much though. It was a bit bizarre and came out of nowhere. Oh well, overall, it was fantastic.

A swift and unpredictable thriller. I like the comparison jacobb1313 makes about this film being somewhere between Hitchcock and Sirk. The house is photographed really well, with several memorable locations, most notably the all-important staircase.

It's obviously really well done and symbolic, but I can't get passed the exaggeration. Maybe I'm not used to that kind of surrealism.

A Shakespearean tragedy of sorts it stumbles at times but it's generally successful. Despite overusing music cues and occasionally seeming absurd it manages to create some real dramatic tension and has some very nice cinematography. And the ending just has to be seen.
