Like a cross between Babe and Moulin Rouge, George Miller's film is a richly-imagined animated musical that seamlessly works in pop songs to its story about a metaphorically gay penguin.

The animation is incredible -- probably the best I've yet seen -- but the plot is lacking in any sort of substance, the idea of singing penguins is far more gimmicky than it is charming, and the ending seems tacked on. It's far better in the first twenty minutes, when Mumble at least has the cute baby penguin thing going for him, but there's a lot less here than there could (and indeed, should) be.

It's a very pretty movie, but I have a huge number of issues with it that I'm not going to list here. The mcGuffin for the whole film is just stupid though, and if they'd used something else it might be less...tedious. That or shave a good 20 to 25 minutes off the first half. I nearly gave up at the 50 minute mark but it picked up a little from there. too frikkin long for its premis.

Good, cute, but not great. Like many people, I thought it was weakened by the final half hour or so. Luckily, the film still had plenty of entertainment along the way.

The happy, animated dancing can't fill in the gaps to flesh out the heavy-handed story. While the movie does have a point to make, the movie is still pretty empty otherwise. How did this win Best Animated Feature? Granted Cars wasn't fantastic either, but it was better than this.

Uh...this movie is weird, dude. Also, too long. But on a technical level it is super impressive, and it was enjoyable to see the director go totally crazy with the camera movements during some scenes.

Nice attempt to introduce the kiddies to classic pop and rock, but the film's both creepy and gives a really scary message. Why do the female penguins have breast-shaped lumps, and why is it okay that they are basically telling children that wildlife is only worth something if it does something cute?
