Summary: A cat-and-mouse psychotic thriller as incisive as it is stylish, Hard Candy delivers a provocative take on the revenge drama while jangling nerves at every turn. The film plunges us into an unstable universe where we cannot readily identify the "good guy" in the tense confrontation between a 14-year-old girl and the 32-year-old man she suspects of pedophilia and murder. (Lionsgate)
One of my all-time favourite films. David Slade's 2005 masterpiece is about as hard-hitting and relentless as anything I have ever seen. The screenplay delivers on so many fronts and it's interpretation of the themes of power and revenge is something quite incredible to see and the performances from Ellen Page and Patrick Wilson are both out of this world. The finale is one of the greatest sequences of the decade and the film as a whole is something that only gets better with every viewing.
It simply can't deal with its troubling, unintentional moral distortions. A torturous and irresponsible celebration of anti-male impulses, at the same time that it's a twisted ode to outlaw vigilantes. Not recommended.
Harrowing, claustrophobic and very smart. Lovely direction, lots of intense close-ups, sustained drama despite only using two characters. The ending was a little off.
terrific performances by the leads. I found myself rooting for both at times even though neither are admirable characters. the lighting and colors in this film looked similar to those in One Hour Photo. overall, a well-written and strange film.
Enjoyable primarily for the way it toys with your epathy. Offhand I can't recall a film where the protagonist and antagonist switch places so fluidly. Kudos to Ellen Page for a sadistic, vengeful, believable portrayal of a girl out for revenge. I still get the creeps just thinking about this one.
What can I say? It was very brutal and it didn't have to even show any graphic violence. Just knowing that the paedophile was getting castrated whilst in conversation with the girl (played by Ellen Paige) was sick enough. Patrick Wilson played the part very well. There was a time where you even thought that he may not have been a paedophile, just a generous man. I even felt a bit sorry for him later on in the film, even if I shouldn't have.
Not the worst thing I've ever seen, but it feels like an awkward attempt to be edgy and push boundaries. When my reaction to a "shocking" film is boredom, something went wrong.
Any movie that has me siding slightly with a child molester for most of the duration has my attention. "Hard Candy" is intense from beginning to end and had me at the edge of my seat for the duration of the film. Two great performances carry 99% of the film, with only 2-3 small cameo roles, otherwise. Very good thriller.
