Absolutely brilliant screenplay, direction and performances. May also be the first example of the "indie film" as a genre (with music by Cat Stevens instead of Sufjan). But it feels - albeit slightly - like it never quite lives up to the sum of its parts, probably because it gets a tad too ridiculous in places. But I'm a sucker for self-immolation and seppoku for laughs, so I'll forgive those.

This eschews the brutal realism of other films from its period and preaches a life-affirming message through off-the-wall absurdity. It requires an unusually large suspension of disbelief, but it works because when the gravity hits, it hits hard. Harold is a tragic figure -- a young man whose histrionic cries for attention bely a deep-seeded fear of living. Maude's optimism is occasionally stilted, but works as counterpoint. Ashby's playful but mindful direction ties everything together.

The indie movie of the 70s. While it is indeed funny, its starting to show its age also.

I guess Harold and Maude is New Hollywood's most audacious and exquisite film, a terrific, bright and engaging black comedy by Hal Ashby.

An excellent cult movie going beyond boundaries. Had to see it after completing Six Feet Under. This cannot be taken seriously but as a paradigm of society and its thoughts.

Bizarre, but funny and potent.

A must see.

An often wildly funny and original black comedy. It's a sick comedy all right -- but if you go along with the spirit of this farce, it's one of the most inventive American comedy films in years.

Eccentric, good music. A lot of fun. Maybe a little dated

Harold and Maude's counter-culture themes don't hold the power they once did, but beyond that, this is a good film. It's funny, intelligent, and has a love story that feels very genuine despite being so odd. Some of their little escapades are too ridiculous for their own good, but I guess it adds to the fun. And I can relate to Harold in a strange way.

One of the most bluntly surreal movies I've ever seen, I can't point to anything in particular I enjoyed about it, but I unquestioningly feel that it was a positive experience.

Love conquers all! "Harold and Maude" is cult and together with "Annie Hall" my favorite romantic comedy Movie of all time. Got a place of honor in my DVD collection and in my heart. Terrific!
