I'll be blunt: Outside of terrible things happening to them in exploitation films and black metal songs, I just do not give a fuck about nuns. At all. Black Narcissus is the exception, but this sure as hell isn't Black Narcissus, even with Kerr on board (doing what I think is suppossed to be an irish accent). Generally a pointless excercise, it's helped (but not saved) by the professionalism of Huston and Mitchum.

As with Huston's The African Queen, there is conflict mixed with romantic tension%u2026 Here, though, the complicating factor is not fastidiousness, but vocation.

A triumph of professionalism over content. A very small triumph.

Decent mainly thanks to the great acting duo of Kerr (rehashing her role from Black Narcissus) and Mitchum. The script is the weaker link, not bad but not much of it plausible (e.g. the very accentuated gender role division, his gallant sexual reserve and her avoidance of religious henpecking, and even more so later plot developments). An enjoyable film, but to whom liked it, I highly recommend John Boorman's similarly themed but far superior Hell in the Pacific.
