Summary: What does it mean to lead men in war? What does it mean to come home? Hell and Back Again is a cinematically revolutionary film that asks and answers these questions with a power and intimacy no previous film about the conflict in Afghanistan has been able to achieve. It is a masterpiece in the cinema of war.

Has so many fictional war film elements that it's hard to believe that what you're watching is nonfiction. Russian roulette (The Deer Hunter), a superstore scene (The Hurt Locker), and a guy with thick rimmed glasses who's probably from Texas (every Vietnam War movie ever.) The crazy bastard who made this even steadicams it through goddamn firefights (The Thin Red Line.) This movie having been shot with a still photo camera is evidence enough for me that digital is okay. (film is still better)

This ambitious documentary employs creative sound design and cross-cutting thru space and time -- methods generally reserved for fiction films -- to create a war film that is painfully beautiful and heartbreaking. Hard to believe this is director Danfung Dennis' first feature. Editor Fiona Otway deserves just as much credit for the impact of the film.

A pretty good doc that follows a young Marine who comes back from Afghanistan with a pretty horrible wound and tells what he saw and did while he was there.

Well shot and very well edited, but ultimately quite boring.

Not the most compelling of stories, but cleverly edited and put together.
