Summary: A matchmaker named Dolly Levi takes a trip to Yonkers, New York to see the "well-known unmarried half-a-millionaire," Horace Vandergelder. While there, she convinces him, his two stock clerks and his niece and her beau to go to New York City. In New York, she fixes Vandergelder's clerks up with the woman Vandergelder had been courting, and her shop assistant (Dolly has designs of her own on Mr. Vandergelder, you see). (imdb)

"More infamous for bringing Fox financially to its knees than for being the last major musical directed by Gene Kelly, Dolly! is one big-assed bull in a china shop." - Eric Henderson

Streisand's role is like tailor-made for her. Funny, charming and lovely.

Somewhat uneven but probably the last of the big old-time Hollywood musicals. The brief scene with Streisand and Louis Armstrong singing the title cut is a classic.

so unbelievably cheesy, and the only word to describe crawford and lockin is doofus--in a cringeworthy way. the dance scenes are extravagant and one or two songs are catchy, but that doesn't make up for the fact that matthau does not belong within the same country as a musical. on top of that this is proof in my bafflement of how streisand became famous, as a singer or as an actress. the worst part is it reminisces too much of those kids in high school drama club i was embarrassed just to see.

Funny little film with a lot of famous and hummable songs. The big-city adventure of one Cornelius Hackl makes for fun family-time watching.

Lavish, luxuriant and a great family film. Barbara Streisand was made for this part with strong support from Walter Matthau and Michael Crawford. Some very impressive set piece numbers and great cinematography. Costumes are marvellous and Yonkers has never looked so attractive. The score is infectious and the number with Louis Armstrong is just the best !

After being somewhat catapulted back into view after briefly featuring in WALL-E, in reality it's a good humoured and enjoyable musical which knows how to exuberantly make fun of itself and provide some good entertainment in the process. The leading parts are excellent, with Streisand providing the musical elements, Matthau being his usual likeable grump and Crawford providing his own distinctive injection of humour. I know it's equally campy and cheesy, in this context it doesn't really matter.

I love Gene Kelly but I hate Streisand even more. She can't even lip-sync to her own singing.
