Drama

During her nightly escapades Hemel searches for the difference between sex and love. Sometimes she leads, sometimes the men with whom she sleeps. The most important person in Hemel's life is Gijs, her father, who works in an auction house. After the early passing of her mother Hemel grew up with him alone. Just like Hemel, Gijs is restless and isn't committed to anyone except for his daughter. This changes when Gijs falls in love with the young auctioneer Sophie. (imdb)

it's rare that frankness about sex is an uncommented-upon trait organic to a greater story, rather than gratuitously milked as an end in itself. hemel, though beautifully crafted and performed, never really skirts that criticism, as there's not much meat here beyond the guiding theme: namely, that the shunning of romantic intimacy stems from a desire to obscure, upon passage into adulthood, the inevitable disintegration of parental intimacy.

Given the arch it builds on, I would argue this view is even more inclined in the nature of romance and sex for those who wander. Of course its philosophical attempt could dive a bit deeper as one would expect with the broken parables. "you make me human" seems to stand out as an interesting remark as the father and daughter seem to be chasing the same thing in opposite directions.

The only way for Hemel to be human – that is to feel human, so something akin to Dasein – is to be physically connected with other people in a visceral/corporeal way via sex, that is to be on them, under them and in them, and for other people to be on her, under her and in her. This is sometimes actualised, as with Douwe, and other times it remains a potentiality, as with her father, Gijs. This is not lust, desire or love, it’s a pathology (not just the Electra complex, but something more).
