Summary: Socially inept garbage man Simon is befriended by Henry Fool, a witty roguish, but talent-less novelist. Henry opens a magical world of literature to Simon who turns his hand to writing the 'great American poem'. As Simon begins his controversial ascent to the dizzying heights of Nobel Prize winning poet, Henry sinks to a life of drinking in low-life bars. The two friends fall out and lose touch until Henry's criminal past catches up with him and he needs Simon's help to flee the country. (imdb)

"See, Simon, there are three kinds of there. There's 'There'. T-H-E-R-E. There are the donuts. Then there's T-H-E-I-R; which is the possessive. It is their donut. Then, finally, there's 'they're'. T-H-E-Y-'-R-E. A contraction, meaning they are. They're the donut people. Get it?"

A great little independent film. Another great performance by Parker Posey. Thomas Jay Ryan and James Urbaniak are also very good in this film. I highly recommend this film.

Slow & frequently boring, but interesting in craft & rather compelling. The performances are excellent, but the film stays on screen when there's absolutely nothing else i care to see. People say Simon looks like me.

It's hard to talk about how I like this movie without sounding like an asshole, but it is very funny in its quirkiness.

Fairly enjoyable overall. I really liked the strange way these characters interacted with one another, Simon slowly but deliberately coming into his own, and the bitterly comic moments scattered throughout.

I had to watch this on a VHS copy with bad sound and picture but it was totally worth it. Really odd, dark little masterpiece with sharp dialogue and three perfect lead characters. Parker Posey!! How is this not a cult classic? Really, more people should see it. And there is a sequel with Posey in the lead ten years later. Can't wait.

Valuable and evenhanded commentary on the classical issue of Nature v. Nurture without issue-driven didacticism or "ripped from the headlines" timeliness. Arcs nicely between comedy and drama without ever giving up either completely, a refreshing break from the often dour documentary-style indies that flooded the '90s, and likewise ahead of its time in its treatment of the Internet as a serious, unstoppable, and fickle social force.
