Summary: In twelve minutes, Herzog connects black-and-white archival footage of the Le Mans racing accident, in which dozens of people died when a race car went off the track, with images of German bodybuilders. Their exercises and poses are a striking comment on the human penchant for challenge and glory. (IDFA)
Genre: Short
Country: West Germany
Directed By: Werner Herzog

Herzog's first film isn't exactly good, but everyone's gotta start somewhere. This is certainly an odd little film, with its contrast of bodybuilding footage with racing crashes, airstrikes, and landfills. The jazz music doesn't fit in too well.

The first Herzog is not quite to my taste, to be honest. It takes, in barely nine minutes, the myth of Hercules and tries to translate it into the social problems of today. The score is annoying and the whole thing is just too artsy and pretentious to bear with (something I wish I hadn't have to say about Herzog), but at least it may leave you thinking for a moment. It's a thing that most films today, at least ten times longer, can't achieve.

Herzog's humble beginnings. Like thumbing through a middle school yearbook and finding an awkward photo of your current crush.

Some things have changed since ancient Greek times, while other things have, more or less, remained the same.

At first I thought it pretentious and mysanthropic, then it gradually grew on me and I thought it was just bitter. Eventually, I think it paints sort of an intriguing picture of bitterness... I don't know if it's that self-conscious but since this IS Herzog, let's be large and give it the credit.
