Summary: Boxer Joe Pendleton, flying to his next fight, crashes...because a Heavenly Messenger, new on the job, snatched Joe's spirit prematurely from his body. Before the matter can be rectified, Joe's body is cremated; so the celestial Mr. Jordan grants him the use of the body of wealthy Bruce Farnsworth, who's just been murdered by his wife. Joe tries to remake Farnsworth's unworthy life in his own clean-cut image, but then falls in love; and what about that murderous wife? (imdb)

Cute down-to-earth plot that falls somewhere between "Topper" antics and "It's A Wonderful Life" idealism. Gary Cooper would have probably been a better casting than Robert Montgomery.

Outstanding old-school fantasy. Engaging story (far better done than in its two remakes), endearing performances, and all in all a damn near perfect example of Hollywood doing its very best at this sort of light, airy confection of a motion picture. How could you ask for better casting than Claude Rains and Edward Everett Horton working for The Man Upstairs? You can even download a beautiful copy of this movie from archive.org

I laughed. The really surprising thing: how closely the makers of the 2001 remake "Down to Earth" matched the appearances of the actors for the two angels. I mean, the guy looks just like Eugene Levy. I have new respect for "Down to Earth" (never thought I'd say that).

The best of the whimsical supernatural comedies. Robert Montgomery and James Gleason are both very funny, and Claude Rains and Edward Everett Horton are my two favorite angels (unless you want to count Lillian Gish in "Night of the Hunter").
