The film focuses on the war of two gangs in 1930s Harlem for the control of illegal gaming - one headed by black strategic godfather Bumpy Johnson and another by white ruthless hothead Dutch Schultz. Negotiations proposed by white syndicate boss Lucky Luciano never get under way, blood flows and Johnson gets jailed. When Johnson is paroled, he gets the work of enforcer for mighty Stephanie "The Queen" St. Clair. She is also jailed for racketeering and when she leaves she makes him promise "no violence". (imdb)

Okay so i walked in late, but the movie runs well over 2 hours so why not? The dialogue, while amusing, is unbelievable, and the romantic interest as well. Some of the scenes are ripe with tension, others talking heads or boring collages. A swell explosion and some good abrupt killings. Bizarre edits of gratuitous nudity. So much to offer so little presented.

Laurence Fishburne'un gençlik mafya filmi. Amerika'nın buhran yıllarıdan, usulsüz sayısal loto işleten mafyaların birbirlerini yemesi. Sert çatışma sahneleri ve doğal oyunculuklar izletiyor. Kankası Illınois ölünce ortalık karışıyor. Türk sineması bu filmden bayağı klişe almış. Filmin sonu kötülerden kurtulup, iyiler kazansa da 1 mafya filminde iyi kötü kavramı da nasıl olmalı tartışılır. Kapalı mekanda şapkayı çıkartınız. Please.

Lots of fun. One of the only modern gangster films I've seen to really evoke the enjoyably loose feel, bawdy spirit, and stylized melodrama of a good (if very long) pre-code joint. Great overcooked dialogue. Not always big on Tim Roth but he really gets into it in a good way. The immortal Cicely Tyson as a (real) godmother of French-African extraction named Madam Queen, c'mohhhhn. And a superb final shot capping a finale that ingeniously updates THE ROARING TWENTIES.
