It has its moments, but this is mostly kid-pandering schmaltz with a score that screams "WHIMSY!!!" in your face for two hours. Somehow has more endings than The Return of the King.

It's a bit of a mixed bag. For every awesome moment, there are approximately two cringe-inducing ones, usually brought on by a child actor. However, when the film gets imaginative, or when Williams or Hoffman really get into the roles, it can be quite fun. If only that fun were more consistent.

Stupid, hideous, and appalling. Always trying to push your buttons, and consistently does a piss-poor job. Another example of a big pile of money spent on nothing -- a nothing with shockingly poor production design, at that. AND I HATE JULIA ROBERTS

I found it to be a good take on the Peter Pan story, sure it's not Spielberg's best but it's still entertaining stuff. Robin Williams is great and suits the part. Dustin Hoffman is fantastic and makes Hook a very memorable villain. It's got some great theatrical sets plus it's got some really comedic moments. It's certainly a kid's movie in the end though but it's still entertaining enough for adults to watch at least once.

The premise is fine. Pity about Robin Williams being such a travesty and Julia Roberts being so miscast, and pity about the endless amounts of annoying kids doing annoying things, pity about the overblown musical score, and a particularly large dash of pity about Spielberg deciding to set his phaser to "cutesy" from beginning to end.

Drink my pee, Smee. The Lost Boys vs Pirates fights: The boys just throw eggs and splash tomatoes on the pirate's clothes and then the boys get stabbed to death. Mrs Banning, who doesn't know anything at all about Peter Pan etc doesn't even bat an eye when the 80 year old man flies out of the window at the end. A good stupid time.

Anti-intellectual, wallowing in stupidity, this shocking rape of J.M. Barrie twists and contorts his play into a contemporary parable about finding one's "Inner Child." Despite Hoffman (who is fine), this is typical Spielberg soft-headed manipulation. Stay away -- stay away! Watch P.J. Hogan's recent PETER PAN instead.

A very bad film that's almost completely salvaged by John Williams' magical score. A bevy of outstanding themes - robustly orchestrated and beautifully performed - that Williams liberally cycles through over the course of what would have otherwise been an interminable 140 minutes (although there's not much score in the first twenty minutes or so). John Williams, we do not deserve thee.

Spielberg's most generic. Seems like he's going through a list of all his trademarks and checking them off one by one. Some scenes do work (the feast. for instance), and when Hoffman and Hoskins really get into it, but even then Spielberg can't quite climb out of the weird gulf between child and adult film.

Hook is a terrific film that plays as a sequel as well as a retelling of the classic Peter Pan story. Dustin Hoffman is an uncanny Captain Hook, and Robin Williams somehow made for an uncanny grown up Peter Pan. The story deepens the meaning of happy thoughts and will make new ones for any viewer every time they see it. Really good!

Hook is fairly by-the-numbers. I've said it before in other reviews and I'll say it again: I love Peter Pan. I mean love. I'm using the word love here about Peter Pan. But it needs to look more authentic than this. Every set looks, well, like a set. It all looks manufactured and contained, as if the film were shot on a Disneyland ride, and I never bought the reality of Spielberg's Neverland once. The best part, of course, is Hook himself. It's always great when Hoffman has license to ham it up.

This might be Spielberg's worst movie. It's so leaden and labored, and the child actors are truly awful. The only good parts are Dustin's Captain Hook and Julia Roberts's lonely blue-screen Tink.

Often criticized as Spielberg's weakest film because it's an overly sentimental adult re-envisioning of a child storybook classic. Despite its flaws it's entertaining enough for kids and holds up well for this alone. Dustin Hoffman chews the scenery as Captain Hook and there's also an unbelievable cameo by Glenn Close that you have to see to believe. Robin Williams is also good as usual. It's not as terrible as people say it is.

Y'all some humorless motherfuckers. The beautiful sets and matte paintings alone make this a trip, and you've got Dustin Hoffman as a pretty killer Hook. It's overlong, and yeah, it's a little schmaltzy, but shit, it's fun, and it works.

This movie gets a bad rap. Sure it nearly sunk a studio and almost took the reputation of one of the greatest directors with it. A surprisingly disturbing retelling of the Peter Pan story, mainly due to Hoffman's performance as Hook. Williams is again good as the man-child while Roberts is annoying even as the supposedly delightful Tinker Bell. However, the standout here is Hoskins as Hook's right hand (or should that be right hook?) man. I clearly liked this film as a child for I had the action figures (including Ru-fi-o!).

I think that in some moments the staging is quite poor and some choices (see the fair in love with Peter) are dubious at least. Most of the cast around Hoffman and Williams is not at their level and is too much evident for my taste. Not a great movie, not an horrible one: is worth a view, but not more than that

Not Spielberg's Best film but it was very entertaining. Most of the GROWN UP Major Characters did a good job much notifiable Hook and Scheme. Some characters were very annoying and under developed. The lighting is just very bright and odd. Just basically the plot is weird and all over the place but it delivers quite well, the film drags on for a long time until finally the ending was very good with the exception of the very end, I think it was a bit to over the top for a kids film.

Steven Spielberg's Hook, a rousing family fantasy-adventure that's built around a very intriguing premise: what if Peter Pan grew up? Spielberg and co. take that premise and, through elements blended together splendidly, work magic with it; magic of both the fantasy and movie variety.

One of those films that you desperately hope will hold up over time, but doesn't. Steven Speilberg's Hook definitely instills a sense of nostalgia in the viewer, but a lack of focus an overabundance of silliness keep this film from being anything but an obligatory throwback to the times when our limited attention spans dominated over our taste in movies.

While the film is super charming at parts and both Hoffman and Williams give worthy performances, it ultimately fails because the story becomes too sappy and bonkers for its own good. There are plenty better Peter Pan adaptations to watch instead than this.

I wouldn't say I was completely Hooked on this like I was when I was younger, but this film remains to be a very sharp adventure film. Dustin Hoffman steals the show as Captain Hook, Robin Williams is a very odd choice for an aged Peter Pan. Maggie Smith is obviously a vampire because she looks the same age in this film as she does today. She never ages!...

A syrupy, overlong, overproduced mechanical film that wastes an inordinate amount of time setting events in motion--the entire first act is utterly superfluous--that by the time it gets moving, it's clear that Spielberg's instincts for this kind of fantasy blockbuster were already fading. Hoffman chews scenery with manic relish, and his presence, along with Hoskins', injects some much needed humour into this otherwise drab and lifeless reimagining of the Peter Pan story.
