One of the few sports movies that feels truly authentic, including those actually based on true stories. The excellent cast, solid direction, and smart writing elevate the material above the usual Hollywood artificiality.

Hoosiers is great. My problem is I cannot even begin to comprehend caring that much about high school sports. Hoosiers made today but it's Gene Hackman coaching Overwatch or something equally pathetic. Sometimes it can be nice when your town doesn't have character.

Officially my Favorite Movie of All-Time. It might have something to do with growing up in Indiana. This movie is awesome. Great cast. Sure it's corny and predictable, but it's based on real life. Recommended to everyone who likes good movies.

Easily in my top ten movies of all-time. David vs. Goliath, individual vs. group, based on a true story, uplifting in every sense...one of the few movies that can also bring me to tears at times. The only thing that holds this back from the perfect score is the few missing scenes that tie everything together.

Very solid sports movie. Not original in the least (though I concede that sports movies may not have been so common back then), but it does a good job of being the archetypal sports movie. Hackman and Hopper are great in pretty much any role, and this is no exception.

As far as straight-forward sports movies go, this is one of the better ones. Hackman is strong in his role, and everyone else is solid. It's a nice, feel-good movie, and easy to enjoy.

Ahh, that feel good movie when the all-white basketball team beats the integrated team in 1954. Yup, makes me proud to be an American! Kind of like the anti-Remember the Titans.

THE basketball movie (well, fiction movie anyway - nothing touches Hoop Dreams), which basically tells you one thing: basketball movies, and most other pure sports movies, aren't great. But it's a good movie.

Yes, it's a sports movie; and yes, you know how it is going to end. But this one feels real, and it's uplifting. It is my favorite sports movie, and one of my all time favorites.

Spike Lee can kiss my ass if he doesn't like this. Racist? Spike, they beat all-black Crispus Attucks in the quarterfinal round (including all-time great Oscar Robertson). This movie perfectly captures the feel of small-town basketball in Indiana during the 1950's. It's a redemption tale of the highest order. Could have scored a 100 if the studio would have left three crucial edits alone...do yourself a favor and watch the deleted scenes.

Not bad. A lot of restraint mixed in with the rah-rah. Hackman and Hopper are both good, and Hershey is beautiful as unusual. Man, I love that scene in the coliseum when Hackman makes the boys measure the court!

Growing up playing basketball in a little town in Indiana I can safely assume I've seen this movie roughly 20-25 times. In that sense I am rather over it, as it was never a favorite and never really inspired me all that much. It's still a pretty good movie. The writing is strong (for a cliched sports movie) and the principle actors are all on top of their games (namely Hackman and Hopper). It's probably the best basketball movie but there haven't really been many good ones.

If you told me you loved or hated this movie I really couldn't argue with you. On the one hand it's a well paced, entertaining movie with some decent performances and an inoffensive story. On the other hand it's corny, predictable, unoriginal and downright lame at times. You gotta turn your brain off to watch this one honestly. I also liked how the only team that they played with black players gave them the most trouble, pretty realistic.

I'm a sucker for any kind of basketball movie and this one touches all the right notes, except for a well-portrayed villain; an individualistic dude (à la Kobe?) who carries his team of losers to the state finals only to be beaten by "pass-at least-four-times" good guys. The one thing I fall in love is the chanting of the crowds in the games in '50s, although they were dumb and childlike.

It's a fun enough sports movie with the expected inspirational arcs and a slew of manufactured setbacks. Better than most films of its kind, but not particularly special outside that context.

All the scenes involving the basketball team have this rather heavily homoerotic feel that I would find hard to believe wasn't intentional. Apart from that, it's like a very well-executed TV movie. Feel-good drivel.

It’s the damndest thing - I’m not interested in sports, I don’t like playing sports, I don’t like watching sports on TV, I don’t really like attending sporting events... yet I really like underdog sports movies. What’s that all about?

Held my attention, but not powerfully moving like The Natural or Rocky. And the racial insensitivity strikes a discordant note by today's sensibilities. Seen through modern eyes, it flirts dangerously with being a white power motivational film.

It is formulaic and soul-crushingly melodramatic, yet because Gene Hackman shines so bright, and the story itself is so heartwarming, it's easy to see why this garnered such a following.

One of the most cowardly things the Academy ever did was sidestepping Hopper's indelible, terrifying Frank Booth in Blue Velvet and instead nominating him for his cutesy drunk in this cheese-fest. Even as inspiring sports movies go, this is pretty lame, with only the always-reliable Hackman keeping it relatively painless. Dreadful Jerry Goldsmith score, too.

The movie to which I compare all other underdog movies. I will say this is starting to show it's age, but it's still a good film. Jimmy is probably what makes this team what it is, but the story instead focuses on the coach, and that's OK.

If you like sports movies, you'll probably find something about this to enjoy. It has all the cliches of the genre, although I am not well-versed in sports movies to know if this was the creation of those cliches. The biggest problem with this film is that every white boy basketball player looked identical with the same crew cut. Also, Dennis Hopper was somehow nominated for this role, in which he cries and stumbles a lot, instead of Blue Velvet, released in the same year.

Enjoyable old man movie. Some of the worst basketball sequences set to film(maybe the point given how hoops was back then) but great shlock from hopper in particular.

Doesn’t just bathe in cliché, but takes a long, deliberate soak in it – this would be indefensible hokum if not for the irresistible opportunity to showcase Hackman and Hopper as actors who can transform themselves (in plain sight) and make most any material palatable, though perhaps it was symptomatic of both men’s becalmed careers that they chose to lend their talents to this glorified after school special, which keeps you waiting for an honest moment of catharsis that never comes.
