Summary: A British writer struggles to fit in at a high-profile magazine in New York. Based on Toby Young's memoir "How to Lose Friends & Alienate People".
An overall mediocre rom-com buoyed by the comedic genius of Simon Pegg and Hollywood star power of Dunst and Bridges. I thought this movie was going to be good, but it turned into a typical rom-com. Simon Pegg seemed to "sell out" for this role, much like the film's character. I thought Ricky Gervais would've been a much better fit.
This movie was barely watchable, but I only suffered it through the end because of Simon Pegg & Jeff Bridges. Gillian Anderson's character was over the top, but she was good too. The rest is just awful and predictable and just not funny.
The most interesting element of this comedy is figuring out if Pegg can pull off a leading role away from the warm, nurturing cocoon of his collaborations with Edgar Wright. He's appealing, but the film is a flimsy thing. It moves lifelessly through standard romantic comedy paces with bland side-trips into the allure and shabby ethics of celebrity journalism. It's the equivalent of an article that you flip through on the way to something else, forgetting it was even there once the pages turn.
i have to say it seemed like an ill fit for pegg. the over all quality of this movie is pretty standard, nothing exceptionally good, nothing to really grab the viewer's attention. it's by no means a bad movie, but as a rule of thumb romantic comedies are never very good either.
Incredibly weak, considering the cast. The only 'humor' is pretty much just Pegg acting like a clueless jerkbag and Fox acting like a clueless ditz. Starts out like Swimming with Sharks but immediately devolves into a relationship story; with one more badly written female character, it could have been titled Fuck-Marry-Kill. Also, they should have remembered the MST3K rule: don't reference movies in the middle of your movie that are way better.
the movie had its moments..but not enough to recommend it...Megan Fox needs to fire her agent...Simon Pegg did his best with what he had to work with..but in the end..this movie fell flat...
Everyone seems to have it in for this movie, but t made me laugh, and that was all it was meant to do ... The acting ? who cares, its not meant to be anything other than a light hearted romp, so i am not looking for "oscar" performances. Bridges, Pegg, Fox and Dunst were just fine, and Peggs totally unabashed crassness was both fun and embarrassing. Sure it could have been a better, pithier ..... you can say that about 99% of films
This is a fairly funny film and with a likeable actor like Simon Pegg as the lead playing a likeable character in Sidney Young you can't help but enjoy watching it. Having said that it's not the most interesting of storylines and a little dull here and there. Kirsten Dunst is good as Sidney's love interest Alison and Megan Fox is quite funny, if not borderline irritating as the sexy Sophie Maes. Overall nothing we haven't seen before but if you're a fan of the actors its worth a look.
