Summary: A hapless young Viking who aspires to hunt dragons becomes the unlikely friend of a young dragon himself, and learns there may be more to the creatures than he assumed.
A fun and heartwarming adventure of a boy and his dragon.
(As a side note, I liked how the children are mainly American but the adults are Scots. And they are all Vikings. THIS IS DENMARK! Sorry, you cast Gerald Butler, I just have to do it.)
The story and characters are pretty by-the-numbers, but I can't deny how fresh and exciting the animation is. The dragon designs are especially fun. The dragons and the people have a real sense of weight to them, making the flying scenes breathtaking. This isn't one of the best animated films I've seen (just a bit too predictable and safe for my tastes) but it did beat my expectations. For children's entertainment, you could do a lot, lot worse.
Very cute. Exciting story and (mostly) likable characters (no points for the father). Hiccup almost reminds me of Homer Hickham, both in name and in behavior.
I'm amazed that so many adults praised the hell out of this movie. It's very predictable and stereotypical, the CG isn't on the Pixar level (yeah, yeah, Pixar snob here), the characters were uninteresting, and the action was only so-so. Still, in 2010 everyone was shitting all over UP and eating this shit up. Dunno why. Probably never will.
Surprisingly charming and funny animation, especially surprising considering this is Dreamworks we're talking about (thankfully they've abandoned the annoying pop culture references for the sake of this film). It loses itself a bit in the last act where the character writing goes all over the place, and wasn't anything special to begin with, but I enjoyed it (and Toothless is darn cuuuuute!).
Yeah, ok, it was good. Clever scripting, ill give you that. But it didnt have the weight and impact that wall-e or Nemo had. And Baruchel's voice is annoying as shit! Still , a entertaining watch.
Where Pixar generally excels above Dreamworks is in its ability to balance actually funny PG-humor and heavy adult pathos. While How to Train Your Dragon is yet another Dreamworks film with no laughs for anyone above 7 years of age and barely efective pathos, it nevertheless succeeds because of its incredible visual storytelling. It's a light, exciting animated feature with pretty good voice acting and a nice adventure story at its core.
Dragons are actually giant scaly kittys! And they're cute! And it's wrong to kill them indiscriminately, unless they're REAAALLLY BIG. Good fun, family movie that isn't painful.
