It occasionally feels a little bit listless, but Garai and Nighy are pretty good in their roles, and the whole thing is tied together by impressive cinematography and nice visuals. It's more style than substance, but there's still a fair amount here to enjoy, as long as you don't require your films to be chock-full of action.

Immensely enjoyable, despite the story becoming a bit silly (too much book crammed into one film). The production values were top notch, cinematography and lighting in particular world class - stunning to look at. Props and costume really excelled themselves to bring the 1930s sparkling to life (with just a few anachronisms!) Superb casting and fine performances from all around, particularly Romola Garai, a "plain Jane" who the camera adores. A great depiction of teenage hormones and emotions.

A young woman's tale every bit as whimsical and entertaining as the similar Ever After, both romantic fairytales told without the use of magic or spells. [ Full Review]

A beautiful story, unravelling as the movie progresses.
The characters have a faint whimsical quality, yet still have a raw, rough edge to them. The emotions are portrayed wonderfully, and the end is a real tearjerker.
