Summary: In his feature debut, noted artist, illustrator and video-director Mahurin celebrates one of his favorite restaurants -- Shopins, a Greenwich Village institution. What emerges is a hilarious and heartfelt hymn to individuality, independence and idiosyncrasy -- not just in the kitchen, but in life. (ThinkFilm)

Not very thought provoking or informative. Just some fucking asshole and his opinions running a shitty restaurant and doing what he needs to get by. My kinda guy.

"Matt Mahurin's I Like Killing Flies utilizes extreme close-ups (sometimes with microphones in clear view) to create an appealingly informal aesthetic of proximity." - Nick Schager

Mahurin tries to use the framework of Kenny Shopsin's hunt for a new locale for his restaurant to give the film structure, but there's actually not much drama to be wrung from that. The film succeeds to the degree that it conveys the specifics of this odd little restaurant and the free-flowing philosophizing of Kenny. There's not much art or accomplishment to Mahurin's film, but he certainly determined an interesting figure to point his camera at and there's something to be said for that, too.

Cheaply made (not that it's a bad thing) indie doc that would like to think it's about more than it actually is -- an unpleasant, pseudo-philosophizing crank who protects his fledgling eatery from scary outsiders. His hardcore customers love him (even if their relationship with the owner got off to a rocky start); those that are turned away for the crime of belonging to a party greater than 4 are mostly bemused. Ultimately, there's just not enough "stuff" there to make for an interesting film.
