Rich with things to come. Genius ending sequence. Nino Rota's scoring is wonderful as always, and fittingly subdued here.

disappointing for a fellini

Not a bad film, but I had to struggle to go through the whole thing. It's boring, for once. I had a hard time trying to care for any of the characters, and at times it's realy slow. I don't see where all the praise come from; it feels artificial rather than sincere and lacks all the heart that great Fellini films have.

The film is full of life and energy, the scene at a party being one of the key highlights, and has a good sense of wit. Fausto is well brought to the screen because though he isn't likable, he is after all a slimey individual who would cheat on his wife given half the chance, you can still sympathise for his situation. You feel sympathy for his aimlessness and his feeling of being trapped to his home town. It's a sad, charming, sensitive and even slightly dreamy little film.

Feels surprisingly modern, given the influence its had over New Hollywood. Perhaps this has something to do with the film's setting, which must have seemed strange at the time, since a voice-over clearly makes the story sound like a reminiscence yet the action unfolds in what was then the present day. The effect would've been like seeing a film from the future. Now we don't have that curious disconnection, and Fellini's post-dubbed sound and floating camera enhances the memory-dream aspect.

An excellent early Fellini film, the seemingly directionless despair over lost youth is captured here powerfully and gives way to a beautiful ending.

I’ve never been a crazy-huge fan of Fellini's work (not that I’ve seen all that much of it), but it’s easy to see his emerging talent in this film. The film is somewhat autobiographical, which you can easily tell, and I liked that aspect of it. It’s not overly exciting, but it has a nice feel to it with some quiet pieces of humour.

"I Vitelloni" is the first film I have seen from Fellini that justifies his reputation. It's nothing terribly inspired, but it is greatly enjoyable thanks to a finely written script, first-rate performances and tight direction. But mostly because 'i vitelloni' are all likeable and realistic characters. The affection we create for them fuels some touching moments as well. Overall, it is an entertaining, engrossing and poignant picture -just what "La Strada" failed to be.

Quite similar to La Dolce Vita in heart and spirit. So full of life!

A nice if rather pedestrian story about small-town life, the transition to adulthood, and that good old feeling of paralysis. You've seen it before, but it doesn't hurt to see it once more.

Another wonderful early Fellini.

My third Fellini (coincidentally, the third Fellini) and I think I'm gonna like his 50s work - energetic, endearing, and thoughtful. One of my personal favorite endings.

It was all right but pretty shitty for Fellini's standards, imo.

A nice film about that time in life when you're old enough to be an adult but still yearn to be free of responsibility. While the direction isn't as accomplished as in Fellini's later work it's solid and self assured and the story is quite touching and well done, even if not really extraordinary.

I Vitelloni is a great character study but it lacks both the drama and the personal endearment that make Fellini's best films so exquisite. This is certainly a worthwhile endeavor and clearly it shows signs of what's to come in his catalog, but it's certainly not among his top tier.

A solid, no-frills early Fellini that I liked. It doesn't do much to distinguish itself, but it's well-crafted, enjoyable to watch, and has some good characters. A little longer and slower than it needs to be, perhaps.
