Well made with some great tense moments.

Still one of the best war movies ever made, even if it's dated (the soundtrack, ye gods!) A small character drama set in the shadow of war.

A war film that's not really about the war. Instead, it's a tense character study about a group of people who strike up an uneasy bond in order to battle the savage indifference of nature. Shot on location in Libya, so you really feel the oppressive, cruel heat of the desert. Fantastic, well-rounded character, but Anthony Quayle as the mysterious South African really steals the show. The only dud note is the shoehorned romantic interlude, but thankfully it's very brief.

A classic British war film with some great performances, all in search of that cold lager.

A wonderfully varied wartime adventure full of tension, action, humour and intrigue. Ignore the pretensions to truth, instead embrace the excellent pacing and great mix of characters as they band together against obstacles of war and the desert. Strikes a few false notes (character breakdown, romance), but really this is superior British filmmaking. Cheers all round.
