Don't judge it by the first several minutes, which was just excruciating (and near-unbearable bits of hokum continue to surface from time to time throughout). The two leads are stellar, and as long as the story focuses on them, it can't go wrong. Temple is amusingly flirty, if a bit hammy--but she's genuinely touching in certain spots. Movie features an interesting foreshadowing of It's a Wonderful Life (the "Auld Lang Syne" singalong and the "wonderful...wonderful..." sequence).
