Summary: In Search of a Midnight Kiss is a rollicking comic ride and tender journey though love, sex, and modern romance in Los Angeles on New Year's Eve. Wilson (Scoot McNairy), a twenty-nine-year old guy who has just had the worst year of his life, is new to Los Angeles, has no date, no concrete plans and every intention of locking the doors and forgetting the last year ever happened... I wonder if this would have received higher scores on here if people hadn't seen Before Sunrise first. I haven't seen Before Sunrise so I came into this film completely fresh and with no comparisons and preconceptions. This is a near-perfect, modern indie rom-com without a hint of pretension. I have not literally laughed and cried in a movie without embarrassment or eye-rolling in a long time. Brilliance.

It's striving so hard for its indie street cred that it completely neglects its own structure: the plot is weak, the characters difficult to feel for, and the dialogue stilted. Yes, there are a couple of nice moments, but they slip between the cracks while the film struggles to decide whether it wants to be a comedy or a drama, and the whole thing feels like it's being crushed under the weight of its own forced awkwardness. Definitely not a winner.

Charming and very funny, but also at times annoying, a bit caricatured and though there were a few nice shots in it for the most part the black-and-white cinematography looked really cheap and tacky and the whole thing feels very student filmy. Also the whole lost shoes thing was FAR too Garden State for my tastes. I liked this film, mainly for how funny it is and the occasional moment that struck me as truthful, but found myself spending most of the time wanting to watch Before Sunrise instead.

Splendid little indie film whose achievements belie its humble origins. It starts out like a cheeky mumblecore comedy shot by some L.A. film students... but by the end it's obvious this is the work of seriously talented people. The clue is in the black-and-white cinematography which looks stark but is not once wrongly exposed. The unknown actors and naturalistic dialogue set up a Nouvelle Vague-esque tale of innocent romance, with layers of deeper meaning. Expert pacing and artistic judgement.

Uneven, with a few stupid subplots that go nowhere, but a few really nice moments. A lot of promise for a first director.

The crisis halfway through felt a bit forced and the ex-boyfriend subplot was unnecessary. Both actors are tolerable but you can't help thinking you've seen everything here done considerably better by Linklater. Holdridge hasn't the same ear for dialogue and, furthermore, his film is somewhat superficial but, while it never escapes the feel of film school production, it's a decent tribute.

Has it's humorous and touching moments but a few characters are over-the-top, some dialogue sounds false, and situations are unrealistic. An example is when the guy first meets the internet date, it's so absolutely ridiculous that the film never recovered for me. Worth seeing though.

Good start, shit middle, and it hasn't finished yet. I think I lost it when she was being so interesting and taking photos of lost shoes. Not original, seen lots of this film before in other places. Aw they kiss.

Really pretentious, at some points obnoxiously so, but overall solid homage to Before Sunrise/Before Sunset (it actually moves from the first to the latter and then back again). The striking images - great composition and depth, use of shadows - steal the show.

With a micro budget and a cast of no name stars this is a film that will go unnoticed by many and almost will be ignored by the masses due to its micro budget and lack of advertising. It's obvious that a lot of effort and care has been put into the making of this very involving film. Hopefully, it will beat the odds and find a wide and appreciative audience. It was certainly a pleasure watching such an engaging and enjoyable low budget romantic drama. A huge contrast in comparison to mindless bi

A postmodern postcinema fantastical INSTANT CLASSIC. A literary tour de force. Imagine before sunrise shot by godard and plotted by francoise truffaut. It was like reading Ulysses or Lolita again for the first time. Also, it gave me the giggles.
