Davis pulls out all the stops, but her character is too shallow and narcissistic to be interesting on any level--in spite of Huston's competent direction and the long suffering performances of Morgan, de Havilland, and Brent. The only things I really liked about this film were Uncle Charlie Coburn's obvious lust for his little niece Bette, and a cameo appearance by Walter Huston as a bartender.. Outside of that, it's pretty boring.

You know you're in for a wacky time of it when there's a male character named Asa and the females are Stanley and Roy. This episode of The Bette Davis Show finds her doing every nasty thing you can think of. Melodramatic and kinda hokey (and Coburn was disappointingly broad), but on the whole done with enough panache and style to pull it off. And of course some crackling exchanges: "I always know what I'm doing"..."See what you escaped?" "See what you missed?"..."Who's winning?" "The dame."
