Summary: Chow Mo-wan rents a room in a Hong Kong apartment building. It's sheer coincidence that he moves in the same day that Su Li-zhen moves in next door. They never have a real conversation until Mr. Chow realizes that their respective spouses are having an affair. This discovery shocks both of them. Mr. Chow, feeling hurt and wishing to understand how the affair happened, begins finding excuses to spend time with Mrs. Chan. (USA Films)
Wong's exquisite eye imbues this film with a beautiful warmth that is gracefully accentuated by the somber strings of its score. He captures the critical moments of Mrs. Chan and Mr. Chow's relationship without excess, and we see the painful distance that evolves between them in disjoint scenes that form a melancholic beat. The contrast between this unattainable intimacy and the abstract distance of their respective spouses is tragically profound.
More orgasmic than porn movies if you have a soft spot in our heart for beauty, rythmic romance, aesthetics ability and the best actor in the world; Tony Leung. The scene where she confronts "her husband" of his infidelity is the most supremely brilliant scene I have ever seen.
A desperate and longing look into the lives of two married, yet forgotten, people in a Hong Kong lodging. Kar Wai Wong elicits enormous amounts of pathos for his two leads, always showing them as so close, yet so very far from true happiness. The film ends in heartbreak, a whisper into a wall, leaving the viewer in shambles.
It is stylish and beautiful and has a wonderful soundtrack and a pair of great leads. But it is also uneventful and painfully slow, often not in a good way. Kar Wai Wong's mood piece is a beauty to behold, but I would rather he would have taken a riskier approach regarding the plot and the evolution of the love story . Worth-seeing nevertheless for the gorgeous cinematography and an authentic romance that may upset many of us used to American rom-coms.
Elegantly shot, beautiful and quite heartbreaking story. I think this movie will get better after repeated views, but this first viewing didn't dissapoint me. You can really see a forbidden love unfold. The ending was just perfect too, even though I wished for something different
