Summary: A prologue shows lumbering, somewhat thick-headed Ingmar climbing a ladder to heaven, where generations of Ingmars sit in dignity around a massive meeting-room. There his father tells him that he must find a wife. But Ingmar then explains that he once took a wife, with unhappy results.
