Not as great as I expected, but it's still a very good film carried by Skarsgård's unsurprisingly excellent performance. Gets better and better towards the end, although it takes too long to get there. One thing I wanted to mention in my review of Orion's Belt which applies almost even more here - holy hell Sverre Anker Ousdal looks like Cüneyt Arkin. It's eerie. I also quite like Ousdal's performance in this.

Seeing Nolan's remake first has possibly undermimed the effect of this original but I felt no sense of urgency for the main character, thus moving this from thriller to character study territory (strictly of the protagonist as the antagonist felt inconsequential). His possibly unhealthy sexual predilictions remained in the background throughout; bringing this to the forefront and with development and exploration could have made for a more interesting film

Better than the remake (which I didn't realize was a remake at the time) in all regards. Pacino did a fine job but Skarsgard has far more to work with in this version; the character is so much more complex in the original. The cinematography is more interesting here and both the sound design and the atmosphere are vastly superior in this version. If you've only seen the Christopher Nolan remake, watch this version. If you haven't seen either of them, watch this one.

Fair murder mystery carried by cinematography.

Pretty remarkable inversion of noir motifs, replacing darkness and shadows with the unrelenting light of the midnight sun.

Skjoldbjærg effectively establish an alarmingly opaque and ambiguous universe from the very start, and Stellan Skarsgård wanders around in the mist all the time, more and more anguished and adrift, and constantly cowardly and amoral. What an antihero, what a film.

I think "gloomy" is the right word here.

Austere character study lacks the visceral dynamics of the Nolan remake; whether that's for better or worse will vary with opinion, but this cold, contained film never shifts into high gear, not giving us enough of Skarsgård's haunted detective's backstory (but there's no faulting his performance). Feels like it's leading somewhere significant, but just peters out; Skjoldbjærg presents some striking scene compositions, but never really captures the feel of the hostile backwoods community.

I didn't find this to be any better (or worse) than the Nolan version. It's just different. Both are very enjoyable.

something as rare as a norwegian classic. very good film with a great performance by skarsgård and yes, it is way, way better than the american remake, which in all fairness was pretty decent still

Skarsgård is great, but the rest of the cast isn't very good. Worse than Nolan's remake in just about everything.

It's not the story - the story is pretty simple. It's not even the "deeper meaning". It's the style of the movie - the lights, the muted acting.

Dark and gritty despite the ever present sunlight, and one of the better norwegian films out there.

This is a very solid dramatic thriller. That being said I'll most likely have to watch it again to really get all the details. I will check out the American remake to see what they changed more out of curiosity than anything else.

Skarsgard's performance is fantastic, and the film is shot with a distinctive style that is disorienting and jarring at almost all times. A great play on the neo-noir.

I liked this film (at least much more in comparison to its American counterpart). Moody and atmospheric, with an ending that will subtly chill you into fright, as opposed to jumping out at you.
