Seeing Nolan's remake first has possibly undermimed the effect of this original but I felt no sense of urgency for the main character, thus moving this from thriller to character study territory (strictly of the protagonist as the antagonist felt inconsequential). His possibly unhealthy sexual predilictions remained in the background throughout; bringing this to the forefront and with development and exploration could have made for a more interesting film

Skarsgard's performance is fantastic, and the film is shot with a distinctive style that is disorienting and jarring at almost all times. A great play on the neo-noir.

I think "gloomy" is the right word here.

Classy nordic-noir, suffused with midnight sun and hallucinatory sound. Great editing too.

Maybe the best norvegian movie made?

Skjoldbjærg effectively establish an alarmingly opaque and ambiguous universe from the very start, and Stellan Skarsgård wanders around in the mist all the time, more and more anguished and adrift, and constantly cowardly and amoral. What an antihero, what a film.

Pretty remarkable inversion of noir motifs, replacing darkness and shadows with the unrelenting light of the midnight sun.

Not particularly original, but it scores points for being moody and atmospheric.

Dark and gritty despite the ever present sunlight, and one of the better norwegian films out there.

something as rare as a norwegian classic. very good film with a great performance by skarsgård and yes, it is way, way better than the american remake, which in all fairness was pretty decent still
