"Mentally very tedious and unrewarding, lacking in plot, but visually and atmospherically rich and unique."

Truly breathtaking cinematography and lighting. The fragility of the story works, as well, with its near-incomprehensible dialogue calling immediate attention to Jakob's metaphysically self-imposed prison cell. It drags when I feel it shouldn't - but perhaps, in a world dedicated to the contradiction of being the best at nothing, well, it definitely succeeds there.

As to be expected from the Quays, this movie features amazing cinematography, rich atmosphere, elaborate use of symbols, and zero narrative. Beautiful and taxing.

Beautiful and phantasmagoric cinematography, as is expected from the Quays, but it doesn't quite hold together as a feature. Still, this is probably the best possible adaptation of Walser's wonderful novel.
