Ichikawa keeps throwing curveballs at you, with freeze-frames, rapid edits, odd camera effects and unusual music choices. The story is an intricate mystery that involves an extremely complicated genealogy without allowing the viewer to get TOO confused. But it falls short of greatness. The style is inconsistent, and for every astonishing shot, there's another one that's just kinda bland. But there are enough wonderful moments to make it a very good movie, and one with an entertaining plot.

If you look up the word Juggernaut in the dictionary, you'll find a picture of this very film. This is a touching, devastating, intricate, complicated and a collosal movie. However, it changes from a forebidding film to a just plain questioning Drama with silly music choices, odd effects and rather stupid sequences. But, it's still worth a watch, and it's quite a good effort from Ichikawa.

This film by Ichikawa has at least a dozen different characters with different motivations, a murder mystery, plot twists, melodrama, horror, comedy, an atmosphere that alternates between being foreboding and silly, several visually stylized sequences, and a soundtrack consisting of rather cheesy '70s synth rock. Weird stuff. Not entirely successful, but quite interesting.
