Nicholson and Streep are in peak form in this incredibly intense, ultimately powerful drama. Both convince that they are not "acting" but inhabiting their seedy, but not hopeless, characters. They are well served by a literate screenplay, careful not to show homelessness as either glamorous or grim, but rather as a fact of life that needs to be negotiated. Fine support work by 60s sex kitten Baker, and direction which gives the viewer a taste of the homeless experience without wallowing in it.
