This movie basically Mani Rathnam's take on the rivalry between M.G. Ramachandran and M.K.Karunanidhi . M.G.R and M.K both are former chief ministers of TamilNadu and this film beautifully captures the friendship and political rivalry and lust for power . I do feel that any person unaware of political history of TamilNadu would find it very difficult to understand this movie . This was a commercial diaster for Manirathnam but is one of most critically acclaimed movies in Tamil.

With an almost sardonic disclaimer of "not a true story", Mani Rathnam nails down pat the Tamil politicians - MGR's & Karunanidhi's - life stories.
