Though I'm usually wary of comedies made more than 30 years ago, this film's humor has incredible staying power. Possibly one of the most enjoyable films I've seen from this era, Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable are delightful to watch, and the lighthearted story has just enough bite to keep you interested.

This film is the pioneer of romantic comedies. It's impressive, the films of the genre still has the same formula, same sequence of actions. So it's a great classic. The film is old and your type of humor sometimes sounds a little dated, but no matter, is a landmark of cinema.

Very good fun, very funny, very charming and I can't think of another road movie that gives you such a great overview of the United States with all different sorts of people and places along the way. The back-and-forth drama at the end of this film felt overdone, or at least for me lacked some of the charm of the earlier bits of the film. Though I don't love it I can still see myself returning to this film quite happily and, hopefully, one day I will love it.

The romance feels forced at times, moving the plot along dutifully but taking a backseat in importance to the humor. Gable's charismatic everyman uses a brusk approach to educating Colbert's affluent heiress to the ways of common folk by using a blend of misogyny and paternalism; a little off-putting in retrospect, but to audiences wearied by hard times the thrill of seeing a naive socialite "get hers" had to have been cathartic. A very funny film, but perhaps overrated given its exalted status.

You like romantic-comdies? This is one of the originals. Don't let the year it was made scare you off--I think many modern viewers would enjoy this.

The plot to this film is fairly original, and the acting was (overall) quite good. I was pleased to see there were only a few definitely over-dramatic moments, and that the rest of the movie felt like "normal people." I wasn't totally surprised by the ending, but I wasn't entirely sure that's where it would end up. Definitely one of the better scripts from this era!

An extremely charming film from Capra. It Happened One Night is a spectacular romantic comedy, and is one of few movies the define what a romantic comedy should be, unlike the interminable crap that has been circulating the screen for decades. Gable and Colbert have great chemistry, and together share some the genres most unforgettable scenes. An absolutely hilarious and witty film with charm, and class.

It's easy to dismiss this somewhat implausible yet cliche plot, but you'd be missing out on screen chemistry rarely rivaled anywhere else. Would love to see Colbert's gams in HD!

This film revolves around class, the unspoken chasm between Gable's cynicism and Colbert's airs. Despise their difference each quietly yearns for the same thing, both too proud to acknowledge their vulnerabilities. The subtlety with which their initial disdain transforms into passion is enchanting. This is a standard formula, executed masterfully, and leant additional weight by the unmentioned shadow of the Great Depression.
