A very good documentary about the world of the filmmaker’s parents.

The second of Scorsese's roundtable discussion documentaries. Unfortunately, unlike Steven Prince, I didn't find the Scorsese folks intriguing enough to hold my interest for the full fifty minutes. They seem like nice people, but this wasn't any better than listening to my own grandparents tell stories.

Perhaps with a less famous director, this wouldn't have been as successful, but as a total whore for Martin Scorsese, I found this very interesting - my general interest in Italian film and culture certainly didn't hurt either. It's actually quite charming to listen to Scorsese's parents talk about their childhoods and their families growing up in Italy and New York, and at 45 minutes, the film doesn't overstay its welcome. A minor entry in Scorsese's canon, but well worth a look.

Gostei muito desse documentário/entrevista do Scorsese, muito bacana a idéia de entrevistar os próprios pais, ambos contam estórias interessantes e são bem carismáticos, especialmente a Mama Scorsese. Enfim, recomendo com certeza!

Supoib. No one but a great filmmaker could pull off something like this. It amazes me that something this substantial, this perpetually meaningful and fascinating, was edited from what appears to be a single visit by Scorsese to his parents. Catherine and Charles don't look like documentary subjects "acting natural" in front of a camera, but instead appear to be spectacularly playing themselves. Their stories about their childhood and immigrant parents are immensely valuable.

Wow, this is such an interesting little movie. Marty's parents are great subjects.

For these types of docs to work you really need to have some eccentric or very interesting people. Scorsese's parents are as interesting as most people's grandparents. While that's not a terrible thing, I can get similar stories to this during Thanksgiving every year. Not a complete waste of time but only for the complete die hard Scorsese fan.

It's like spending an evening with two elderly Italian-American immigrants -- take that as you will.

Scorsese's parents are so funny. Did anyone make the recipe?

One of the most endearing things a director has ever done. He shares his parents with us, his old home, the stories that brought him here. The quirks of his parents remind us of those of our own parents. It is pleasant just simply to watch two people who are never afraid to pick a fight with each other, have their many clashing opinions and have learned to let it all slide, to live with each other in peace. Their hostility is not hostility to them; it's just how they talk to each other.

beautiful mini-portrait, oral history, subjective documentary of loving, sincere material. and if I'm being honest, I just need something comforting. this has it. my mom taught me her recipe for spaghetti, it never occurred to me to put it in a credits sequence. just beautiful.

A kernel of insight into this filmmaker's pathology and preoccupation for stories about the Catholic Italian-American identity. The Scorsese family tree, for posterity. So beautifully personal and intimate. A two-fold time capsule, granting a brief glimpse of Little Italy-turned-Chinatown in 1974, from which stories of an even older world are recalled.

Weirdly, one of my favourite Scorsese films.
