Oliver Stone unjustly took slack for this picture--with some critics saying he confused audiences by creating a misleading docudrama. That misses the point. This is a technical masterpiece, with flawless editing, painterly cinematography, and perhaps Costner's best performance. But the story is even more amazing: a Shakespearean tale about a hero fighting to hold the powerful accountable for what they've done to a leader. A piece of perfection that rewards people in viewing and discussions.

Call me crazy if you will, but this film was made just after the release of Windows PowerPoint (May 1990), at a time when the corrupt power structure and plutocrats were desperate for the general public to believe in the need for presentations to be accompanied by a sequence of rapidly changing illustrative images, and to believe that, in the quest for truth, a sequence of such "slides" was more important, because more persuasive, than any sober presentation of facts. We now live in their world.

Extremely heavy on the eye-rolling emotional sledgehammer, but also one of the best edited films of all time. It's so slick that the ridiculous conspiracy theory seems completely plausible (if you want the more mundane truth go read Vincent Bugliosi's "Reclaiming History"), on top of reinforcing the Camelot myth for a good deal of those who watched this. JFK wouldn't have ended the Cold War singlehandedly had he lived, but he would have made napalming Vietnamese villages a little more classy.

Oliver Stone proves the power of manipulative images in this, his most masterful outing. Kevin Costner provides a solid performance, anchoring one of the densest cinematic experiences ever commited to film. Quality technical aspects, from Oscar-winning cinematography and editing to underrated sound design and art direction, rule the day. Finally, John Williams created one of his most emotionally down-tuned scores which cuts a meaningful undercurrent beneath the explosive imagery.

JFK is split between a film about a conspiracy and a film about a man completely obsessed in trying to unravel it. Regardless of how much truth there is to the film it's a marvelous piece of craftsmanship, filled with suspense, drama and a few stirring speeches.

Stone pulls off quite a neat trick here, blending an impossibly complex web of characters, theories and sometimes distracting cameos (John Candy? Why?) into a riveting three-and-a-half (!!!) hour drama. As someone who is only passably familiar with JFK assassination theories I was much less concerned with the historically accuracy of the events portrayed. So your mileage may vary there. In an astounding cast, a special nod goes to Gary Oldman as Oswald...there's nothing this guy can't do.

The kind of movie that makes bland investigation and boardroom conversation the height of entertainment, purely through Stone's jacked-up approach to filmmaking. I like how the film is basically about a guy collecting information for literally hours and yet the finale where he presents said information is still a total knockout. Throw in the sleazier elements (I'm not sure why everyone is not talking about Joe Pesci's wig and brows all of the time) and you end up with a real good time.

Stone's counter-myth to the Warren Commission. The intrigue of it is not who or how because frankly whether the magic bullet theory is valid or not isn't that interesting. Rather it's distracting from a bigger picture of why, i.e., the role of the military industrial complex in the U.S.'s (secret) government. "The Agency plays for keeps." Technically, it's the usual Oliver Stone sensory rape-job. A flurry of stock footage, aggressive editing, & John Williams scoring.

Oliver Stone blows hot and cold with me, but Stone is at his hottest with this one. I saw this for the first time when I was 14 years old, and no movie, with the exception of Aliens, has kept me up at nights scared of the dark. I would have classified this as a "horror" film when I was 14. Today, it is one of the best mystery films of all time, and I don't care if the conspiracy theory of the JFK assassination has since been discredited.

There’s three layers to mull over: First, the film in a vacuum as a piece of filmmaking, acting, editing etc at which it thrums along compellingly for an impressive three-plus hours. Next, the actual historical/JFK conspiracy angle, where I will lay my cards on the table and say I view it as flat earth-tier nonsense, which makes me unable to really see this as a GREAT film. But that leads into layer three: Watching Oliver Stone publicly lose his mind, which loops around to enjoyable again.

'JFK' may be more fiction than fact (and most records will show exactly that if you - like me - spend years studying the case), but it's Stone at his finest hour nonetheless. And a perfect example that movies don't need to be historically accurate to achieve greatness and cause huge worldwide debate. Even at the 20th viewing this three-hour drama edited, scored and acted to perfection never loses grip for even a second.

Oliver Stone's hugely controversial examination of Jim Garrison's (Kevin Costner) crusade to uncover the conspiracy behind the Kennedy assassination might put forward a number of hard-to-swallow theories, but in the end its most significant goal is to prove that a conspiracy existed, whatever the particulars. And it does that extremely well. Passionately directed, exhaustively written, and well-acted by a dynamite cast (Costner is at or near his best), it's the quintessential Stone film.

I really have no idea how historically accurate it is, but it brings up some interesting questions. Regardless, it's an entertaining and well-made film. Oliver Stone's direction coupled with the editing makes for a compelling watch. I can definitely see how it informed the way he directed Natural Born Killers (1994) a few years later. Kevin Costner is as dull and uncharismatic as always, but the rest of the cast are great. It's well over 3 hours long, but it's worth it just for the climax alone.

Overwrought, but well-made with many great performances. Unfortunately it's very manipulative, packed with elaborate historical exaggerations and half-baked speculations presented as facts. But this doesn't necessarily make it bad. It's intriguing and complex, conjuring the same mood of manic outrage and paranoia that often drives true believers who feel they've stumbled into the tentacles of an overwhelming, multifaceted conspiracy. There's a fairly good film within the chaos and half-truths.

JFK is a blockbuster in every sense of the word. The story is engrossing and well plot out. I never thought about any cuts to it during the 3 hour runtime. The acting has so many surprises that it is hard to keep track of all of the talent that keeps appearing throughout the movie. Costner is smart, funny, emotional, and powerful throughout his whole performance. Joe Pesci is the blowout character of this film. He makes me believe that his character acted like Joe Pesci. Candy was perfect also.

Oliver Stone's masterpiece may have had many justifiable charges of historical innaccuracy lobbed at it, however it remains a fascinating meditation on the search and importance of truth, even if the 'facts' presented are highly subjective. It is an incredibly well-crafted piece of cinema, with an opening title sequence that is a masterpiece of film editing. Uniformly fine performances from an impressive ensemble, used well so that one can always easily track each character. A truly great film.

Two memorable scenes, great as they are, do not make a great movie. Costner lacks the presence necessary for his role and Pesci is seriously miscast but otherwise the cast are decent. I went in with really low expectations, but I really liked this. The quick editing is great, and Stone is somehow able to string together a compelling and suspenseful narrative out of a succession of scenes where people just recite facts. That's actually amazing. I thought at points the casting was kind of off though. Joe Pesci doesn't really work, Tommy Lee Jones doesn't really work, John Candy doesn't really work. The movie's not really about the performances though, so it's forgivable.

Cinema of paranoia, cinema of no interior. There is only a million surfaces all shifting and gliding past each other like a moving hall of mirrors that is impossible to see through. A rorschach test of a movie if I've ever seen one, where some compelling and some not so compelling information is presented, all coincidences are not coincidences, Occam's Razor does not exist and abstract notions like truth and justice subsume the interior world of the human mind over all else.

Oliver Stone at his peak - stylish, excellent editing, such variety in cinematography, while at the same time completely smashing any level of subtlety into the stratosphere, to the point where the last third of the film feels like an extended (but convincing!) lecture. Costner is really good, as are several of the supporting cast, with some cracking dialogue. Additionally, if nothing else, it captures a real sense of paranoia and conspiracy, if it doesn't necessarily convince you of fact.

Long. Long. OVER long. I'm fairly certain this film was edited in such a way as to make ME admit to the shooting so long as the film would end. I'm not the most in the know in regards to all the theories around the assassination, and when I look up what people say about this movie it seems everyone either thinks it's complete bullshit or 100% accurate. The size of this is beyond me, comments New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison in the course of his probe into the Kennedy assassination. And to the extent that writer-director Stone identifies himself with his lone-voice hero, truer words were never spoken. Essentially the movie is simply a remake of 1973's _Executive Action_ (based on Mark Lane's _Rush to Judgment_), but with several more mountains of circumstantiation.

"JFK" is a vehicle for Stone's own conspiracy theories. It should have been a propaganda documentary. There's not enough dramatic context in the plot to justify this being a fiction film, especially when most of the conspiracies in it are quite preposterous. The runtime (3+ hours) is unjustified at best, the performances mostly tepid, and despite its being extremely well-made and climaxing with a brilliantly constructed court sequence, "JFK" is merely a humdrum and shamelessly one-sided pic.

*Director's cut* This has the potential to be a great film, but unfortunately the whole is less than the sum of its parts. All of the acting performances are superb, but there is something skew-whiff about the directing of Oliver Stone and the contribution to editing by Hank Corwin. Nevertheless, it's a film that actually changed history in a direct and immediate way and gave us one of the great homages in television (Wayne Knight appearing in both): "That is one magic loogie."
