In 1975, director Steven Spielberg brought Peter Benchley's best-selling novel to the screen with stunning power and unbearable suspense. Jaws left an indelible mark upon the movie-going (and beach-going!) public, distilling a sea of fear from these five words: "Don't go in the water." Once the terror begins, Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw must join forces on a desperate quest to destroy a killer embodying nearly three tons of white death. (Universal Pictures)

Justly famous for inventing summer blockbusters, and it's still one of the best. Everyone involved is at the top of their game, delivering a high-octane, crowd-pleasing film that's captivating from the first scene to the last. (Although I've always wondered why that one kid's mom is clearly 60 or so.)

Steven Spielberg 's "Jaws"(1975) is the greatest B-movie ever made, and a piece of cinematic history. The first summer blockbuster ever was a shark attack movie. Arguably one of the greatest movies ever is a simple well-written suspenseful story about the horrors a monstrous shark inflicts on a small beach town. The thing that elevates this film above average monster movie schlock is just how well done practically every aspect of the movie is, with examples being the characters and iconic score.

Lifts shirt to reveal hernia scar, thinks better of it. Nobody told Quint he wasn't in a musical. Anybody catch the shooting stars in the background? Somebody told me that they were a reference to ET, which hadn't even been made yet. I assumed that this same person was being catfished by somebody using pics of Alexis Texas and it turned out it was actually her. I don't know what to believe anymore. That whole episode had Spielberg levels of roller coaster tension!

Famously igniting the explosion of blockbusters, Spielberg's tale of a voracious shark is off to a brilliant start. In the first half, less is more. The pace is quick, the storytelling and building of dread masterful. Once we get onto sea, though, the movie slows down and while the performances leave nothing to be desired, the shark itself, in all its animatronic horror, regrettably does. Seeing it is just not scary. At all. The score, however...

Watching this in 2020 Gave me a different perspective A completely different type of danger than in the movie But still boils down to officials are more concerned about money then shutting down for public safety......Let that sink in for a minute As for the movie itself not bad a tad long for my taste I've heard of " Jumping The Shark " BUT " Shark Jumping On The Boat" ???

Great thriller masterfully directed by a young Spielberg. Terrifying in a viscerally powerful manner. Richard Dreyfuss is fabulous. Robert Shaw's Indianapolis speech chills me to the bone every single time I hear it. Mows you down at the start & never lets up.

A sad state of affairs when such a clumsily handled work can become a blockbuster. Bad direction, worse acting. What Spielberg does not realize is that the audience should see the shark CONSTANTLY; so often in fact that its appearance should almost become commonplace so that we are truly frightened when it eats someone. Let me not get started on the horrible joke of a score Williams handed in. A few notes is not a score. Far inferior to the ahead-of-its-time classic Jaws 3D-- Armond White Jr.

I'm sorry, it needs to be said, Jaws is overrated. I can definitely see why it is so well renowned, and considered a masterpiece, but honestly, I considered it to be a bore. Jaws was extremely well done, even in todays standards, and has quite a number of suspenseful moments, but all in all it seemed rather dull.

It launched a whole genre. Great tension buildup with local politics and not revealing the shark too early. Memorable characters. Iconic sound. I'm not really into shark movies. The only downside is that the shark didn't look real out of the water, but it's not like I've seen a live shark attack a boat. Some dumb decisions by the 3. Fav scene: whose idea was it to send the least actiony guy into the shark cage?

With excellent character development, a pitch-perfect delivery of mounting intrigue, and a hell of a climactic showdown that will have every viewer silent on the edge of their seat, Jaws proves to be one of the greatest thrillers ever created -- a blueprint for all movies to follow it in how to achieve true visceral suspense. Absolute must-see entertainment for fans of Spielberg, monster flicks, and just about everyone looking for a scary good time.

Spielberg perfects his niche for storytelling with the first Blockbuster. The accidental genius is from the failure of the shark to work during production forcing him to place the terror in the unseen, which works so much better. Ridley played this to intentional perfection in 1977's Alien. The characters are what Speilberg shines at and they do shine brightly here. A happy accident that has prevented me from swimming in the ocean ever since.

A simple monster movie that Spielberg made before anybody knew who he was. Still holds up very well after all these years, and for an appropriately simple reason: Robert Shaw is a bit much, but everything else works like a charm. In particular, excellent performance from Roy Scheider as a not terribly macho but dedicated small-town cop. Even then, Spielberg was smart enough to pay attention to characterization, humor, etc. instead of focusing on GRIM AND UNRELENTING all the time

A great summer blockbuster. I think Roy Scheider's reaction to seeing the shark for the first time is one of the best reactions of sheer surprise and terror I've ever seen. It's comical but at the same time completely genuine. Also it has a fantastic score by John Williams.

I saw bits and pieces of this so many times before I actually sat down and watched it front to back that I already knew the whole thing before that point. It's my mom's favorite film, and has become one of my favorite Spielbergs. It's easy to see the far-reaching influence it had in essentially creating the summer blockbuster, but beyond that, it's just fantastic entertainment, with memorable characters, extraordinary dialogue and one of the great movie villains: a big fucking shark.

One of the best horror films ever made, and one of the best films made period. Say what you will about it, one can't deny the impact it had on the world's view of water. Created the summer blockbuster, which now assaults us in all seasons, but the sheer craftsmanship here is undeniable and a far cry from the event films made today. Spielberg took a junk book and transformed it into a first rate thriller that's aided immeaurably by Williams' menacingly minimalist score, whose insistent pounding really ramps up the tension. Scheider, Dreyfuss and Shaw have great chemistry, and there are a number of suspenseful sequences that rank with the best of their genre.

This is a good movie, but the first half on land pales when compared to the excellent second half on the boat. The whole "you can't close down the beach even though the shark has already killed two people because we'll lose money" thing was overly familiar, predictable and kind of tedious. It's not all bad and I did quite enjoy the first hour of the movie as I was watching it, but in retrospect it ranks several tiers below the second hour.

It just doesn't get much better than this. My favourite film of all time (probably). I remember seeing this in the cinema when it came out. Speilberg's direction has been better, he's had better plots and better casts but there is magic to Jaws that makes it the perfect escapism for me and that's what I look for from a film at times. Okay, the shark doesn't look as terrifying anymore and Spielberg has some cheap ploys for terror along the way but the suspense still gets me going at its best. I give most of the credit to the three main actors in the roles they were made for, that iconic music, and tasteful direction for material that could so easily have been made cheap and stupid (for example, see every sequel in this series).

(2nd viewing) Years since I've last seen this and I've honestly forgotten how good this was, both as a masterclass in tension and as entertaining B-movie fare. The deftness in the way Spielberg blocks a scene is truly admirable, and I highly recommend watching 'The Spielberg Oner' essay on youtube. Am I weird in thinking that the first half is better than the second? I mean, I really enjoy both Quint and Hooper--and believe that the dialogue in general is great--but when it becomes more adventure/action oriented, it also becomes more whimsical from a soundtrack perspective, which cut a lot of tension for me. Didn't find it THAT exciting. However, the first half when it was just a straight up horror movie (w/ some comedy), complete with a looming dread, is wonderful.
