Summary: Tamra Davis pays homage to her friend in this definitive documentary but also delves into Basquiat as an iconoclast. His dense, bebop-influenced neoexpressionist work emerged while minimalist, conceptual art was the fad; as a successful black artist, he was constantly confronted by racism and misconceptions. Much can be gleaned from insider interviews and archival footage, but it is Basquiat's own words and work that powerfully convey the mystique and allure of both the artist and the man.

Despite the light tone many of the talking heads here assume and despite ample examples of Basquiat's stunning smile, a persistent melancholy haunts the edges of the milieu depicted in this too-breezy documentary. You wouldn't know it from the film itself, however, which feels as dry as a filmstrip shown in high-school art class. Basquiat was one of contemporary art's greatest briefly blazing lights; but to feel that, rather than just know it, watch instead Julian Schnabel's biopic, Basquiat.
