Jeremiah Johnson: mountain man, trapper, Indian fighter, nature lover. That's all the film is about --a romaniticized portrait of the rugged individualist (you can tell it was John Milius screenplay even if his name weren't on the credit). There's plenty of scenery porn, and Robert Redford gazing wistfully/moodily/savagely into space.

The vast majority of the film has aged very well. Redford is superb as the unwilling hermit hero seemingly destined to lead a life of conflict. The fight scenes are intense without feeling over the top or goofy but instead have a real life or death struggle to them. However I must say the soundtrack has become dated. Hearing someone sing a ballad about the main character is almost comedic, I'm sorry to say. Thankfully the vast majority of the film is superb.

Jeremiah Johnson is an old classic romanticized vision of the mountain hermit lifestyle, an epic of wilderness survival and a tragedy of the inevitable loneliness that comes as consequence of it all.

To my surprise, this film lulled me into its world. Usually I feel emotionally distanced from Westerns. To me it always feels like male wish fulfillment, or like grown men playing dress-up. Technically, this is what Jeremiah Johnson is, but it never feels like it. Why? Robert Redford's completely believable and immersing performance, for one. Secondarily, the melancholy turn the film takes, which few Westerns do. Thirdly, the film's unrelenting silence. Must-See for Redford fans.

Starts very well but lacks in the second half of the film. It would have been great if Pollack had focused the story on the survival part like Jeremiahs beginning of the journey. Nevertheless a descent western with an awesome young Redford.

A man builds a idyllic large luxury wooden lodge, virtually overnight, in the forest with nothing more than an axe, a dainty lady and a small child at his disposal! He must have worked them like slaves!? It gets bonus marks for Redford's awesome beard, but this film spends too much time doing nothing to be actually any good.

I don't usually hear about this movie when talking about hidden gems, but I think it's one of Redford's best roles. I like the way it is shot, and it's just a nice story about the wilderness.
