An odd movie, compassionate and strange, depicting semi-criminals and drug addicts surviving on the fringes. Downbeat, but with a touch of mysticism. Not as good as the book, but still pretty good.

Well done. The movie makes being a drug addict seem amusing and tragic at the same time. Dopers: funny or sad, you decide. Whatever, i don't suppose I'll ever really like movies about junkies.

it took a brilliant mind to take a book of short stories and tie them together in a single narrative (one that actually works, at least). i was extremely impressed with this movie, it made a great yarn with it's share of depressing and hillarious moments, sometimes at in the same instant. this is also one of the first times that i didn't mind morton, mostly because she dies.

This is the biggest hit or miss movie I've ever seen.. If you've read the book then you know what I'm talking about. In the end, I think Crudup makes for a terrible "Fuckhead" (I doubt he read anything by Johnson). There are definitely moments though that had me laughing fairly hard, but am I still being unfair when I say those moments don't ever compare to the book? Whatever. Read the book if you know what's good for you.

Meandering movies like this are risky, and this is mostly successful. Crudup is consistently compelling throughout, while the rest of the movie is uneven, with some well done tragicomedy.
