Summary: Stewart Kane, an Irishman living in the Australian town of Jindabyne, is on a fishing trip in isolated hill country with three other men when they discover the body of a murdered girl in the river. Rather than return to the town immediately, they continue fishing and report their gruesome find days later. Stewart's wife Claire is the last to find out. Deeply disturbed by her husband's action, her faith in her relationship with Stewart is shaken to the core... (imdb)

Lawrence expands on the story wth racial elements, which adds some interesting angles to the themes of guilt. The characters feel a wide array of guilt, and use it as a weapon against each other. I found the drama rather compelling with its dilemmas and interpersonal conflict. However, the film does lay it on a bit thick, despite attempts at subtlety. Some of the metaphors are pretty heavy-handed. And the performances are not terribly impressive. Still, a worthwhile film for fans of moral tales.

"Aussie filmmaker Ray Lawrence's debt to Robert Altman in his previous Lantana is made explicit in his new film Jindabyne." - Fernando F. Croce

Frustrating. Sometimes it feels like a beautifully assured, ambiguous character study/understated drama, and at others it feels like an overwrought, preachy melodrama. So I don't know. Furness is terrible (something I attribute to Lawrence's habit of one-take scenes), but just about everyone else is good, so I can forgive him this sin. Lawrence is good with atmosphere, but he seems to get lost in the details sometimes.

Not much in the sense of a thrilling experience, but it is a tense psychological drama.

Not too memorable, but the cast does a decent job and it certainly looks pretty.

Addresses the inevitable questions of race and ultimately white guilt but not in a forceful way it's just laid out for you to take in in whatever fashion you see fit.

Gabriel Byrne and Laura Linney. Saw this film by mistake. Very watchable, ominous dark feeling throughout. Great mother in law stuff, and domestic rows.

Beautiful nature shots from Australia. Uneven performances. The film-making here is jumbled, but also subdued. It would have benefited from a clearer vision, and tighter reins, especially in the second half. I ultimately like the artistic intention more than the result, but the film is well worth seeing.
