This middle section, in which both Carter and the audience get a crash course in the politics, history, and theology of the Red Planet, is the movie at its most imaginative and most fun.

Lot of action, intrigue, alien creatures, space travel, fighting, comedy and chemistry between the characters. Great music and audio. The fiction was hard to swallow, with big holes in the plot. Taylor Kitsch was a good leading man, gritty and engaging. Lynn Collins at possibly her personal best. Dominic West a good bad guy. The animation and special effects were acceptable but some of it detracted from the movie or was paced badly. Great costumes. Overall it was fun to watch and I enjoyed it.

If I were 13 years old again, I would have been all over this movie. The world-building is cool but perhaps excessive. There's a bit too much mythology to keep track of. One thing I think is fun is the editing, often employed for comedic effect. Ultimately, it tries to be different from the original story's many derivatives throughout the years, but Stanton doesn't quite take it far enough to make it feel totally fresh, but it's enjoyable nonetheless.

Points for trying, a lot of points, because I love the source material. The problem with this adaptation is not the changes in plot (those were generally OK), but the change in tone. Too often this film forgets that its based on a pulp serial, and while the book has constant death defying escapes or rescues performed by an over the top hero, this has but a handful, performed by a very subdued version of John Carter.

Way more fun than expected. Not all intentionally, but still not too bad for a action movie with the most dull (and under-buffed) lead since Sam Worthington came along.

I give it an equals (based on a scale of negative, equals and plus). Really a good movie for what it was. An action adventure fantasy story. I watched it because of all the negative reviews by the media. Just as I suspected it was another OK movie. Media bashed it because it was trendy to do so. The special effects were great as you might imagine with the price tag. The look of the film was great. The pacing was appropriate for the film type as was the acting and characters.

My wife and I were looking forward to a fun night out and this movie delivered. Take Edgar Rice Burroughs's Barsoom novels, scramble the events in a blender, season with Star Wars design and a soupcon of steampunk and you have John Carter. If Woola doesn't make you laugh, you're probably a thern.

One of the best told sci-fi/fantasy stories I have seen in a while. The plot is a bit predictable but always entertaining, the characters are introduced in a proper way and the story covers enough ground to really get a feel for the planet and its inhabitants.

Okay, so this is Disney's miserable attempt of making another Avatar. Admitted: the cast here is pretty awesome (except of course the main charachter), but where Avatar was so-so, this is just plain idiotic. I could not be more satisfied with the current world-wide gross being 50 million dollars below production costs. Lesson learned? Unfortunately, I doubt it.

The story is nothing new, the leads don't work that well, yes, but I think there are a lot to admire in this too. Despite the cliché-ridden story, the script isn't really bad, it even has some strong points. The techs are very good. And Stanton obviously put all he has into this to make it an enjoyable film with a heart. It reminded me films like Indiana Jones and even Back to the Future, honestly. I'm not disappointed.

Stanton (Pixar) and T.Kitsch ('Friday Night Lights'-series) have lot of goodwill going into this, but Stanton has to take his part of the blame for the limitations from the script; Kitsch is more excused. Still some enjoyment to be found; it's an adventure-film after all! *Preview*: #12#, popcorn, hype, story, writer-director Stanton/2-1, (casting).

Confusing and dumb storytelling, very shitty plot structure, boring cinematogrophy, weird editing, lame cgi work (for the most part)...direction was just really lame in general.
I mean all that jumping shit looked and was so fucking dumb and retarded. And those random comedy moments seemed out of place and just did not work.
The whole mythology was so fucking inconsistent. As were the caracters.
And the ending was so dumb. And the second ending was even shittier.

It's a difficult task to watch this movie. Had to keep reminding myself that the movie didn't steal from other movies. This was me all through the movie. "Aw come on, they stole that from Avatar or Star Wars or other sci-fi movies" only to remind myself that the story is from 1912, so unless Burroughs invented a time machine, went forward in time and ripped off Cameron and Lucas, this is the mother of modern sci fi. Nothing to fancy about the movie. A nice movie for the entire family.

dude, a principle character with the initials j.c. with god-like abilities!? Plus he's a confederate-vet/prospector? Josey Wales anybody? this had great pulp written all over it. there are all kinds of wrong ways you could go with this juicy tale and still turn out something half-decent. & that's what happened. Actors sucked. Dialogue blew. Action scenes "Disney-fied"/neutered. In the end turned out just like the books, great story but poor execution. production design was phenomenal tho.
