I am shocked at the indiscriminate trashing of this film while other garbage films get a high ranking. Did people go and see it first? I really like it. I thought that it brought the book to life in a very creative way. It is a good visual movie. Taylor Kitsch's performance meshing well with the acutal character profile and understated does work people. I read a review on Rotten Tomatoes that said, forget the naysayers and just go and see it; -- so I did and I am glad that I followed that

it's a sad thing to witness that despite the fact the story you've adapted into a movie was one of the pioneers of the concept and yet it is bound to be labeled as cliché. of course by "the story", i address to, you know, "white man saves the savages" concept. Sorry burroughs, theme of your story has been already hit the theaters so many times. nothing new on western front except the cool visual arts and some interesting stuff related physics.

Confusing and dumb storytelling, very shitty plot structure, boring cinematogrophy, weird editing, lame cgi work (for the most part)...direction was just really lame in general.
I mean all that jumping shit looked and was so fucking dumb and retarded. And those random comedy moments seemed out of place and just did not work.
The whole mythology was so fucking inconsistent. As were the caracters.
And the ending was so dumb. And the second ending was even shittier.

Someone should read a book on how to put together a film. This is just all over and does not know what story it wants to tell. If it had cut away all the indifferent sideplots and focused on one it might not would have ended out as Disney's: John Carter of Arse!

Solid fun, but there is something completely wrong with film's structure. It comes across as an unbelievable uneven narratif in terms of speed and what it choses to tell. The storybuilding is somewhat extensive but some of the key moments are either way to short or too long. I would like to a second take on this, though..

A pretty seriously mixed bag. Alternately light-fingered and ponderous. Sometimes it offers us great moments that verge on the iconic, other times it bores us to tears and just sort of sits there. Overall, I guess I'd say it's half entertaining, half forgettable. Kitsch and Collins both register well, and the movie tries hard. Whether it ultimately succeeds depends upon the mood you're in, I guess.

If I were 13 years old again, I would have been all over this movie. The world-building is cool but perhaps excessive. There's a bit too much mythology to keep track of. One thing I think is fun is the editing, often employed for comedic effect. Ultimately, it tries to be different from the original story's many derivatives throughout the years, but Stanton doesn't quite take it far enough to make it feel totally fresh, but it's enjoyable nonetheless.

I've got mixed feelings towards this film. It's the first big scale Barsoom film, but same time the director/writer has done questionable choices. Tharks life looked nice (two tharks clanging their tusks on each other was the best part!), but for example red people failed to shine in any way. And excluding the part of Willem Dafoe the entire cast were nothing special. There was caps in the plot and the whole story was badly mediocre.

Points for trying, a lot of points, because I love the source material. The problem with this adaptation is not the changes in plot (those were generally OK), but the change in tone. Too often this film forgets that its based on a pulp serial, and while the book has constant death defying escapes or rescues performed by an over the top hero, this has but a handful, performed by a very subdued version of John Carter.

The story is nothing new, the leads don't work that well, yes, but I think there are a lot to admire in this too. Despite the cliché-ridden story, the script isn't really bad, it even has some strong points. The techs are very good. And Stanton obviously put all he has into this to make it an enjoyable film with a heart. It reminded me films like Indiana Jones and even Back to the Future, honestly. I'm not disappointed.

John Carter managed to in tandem bore and confuse me, and nothing else. Honestly, I don't know what to say about this. I don't know where the budget went. I don't know who OKed this script. The story had a ton of potential and this narrative wasted every single ounce of it. I've rarely cared so little during a film. Couple good moments, and the relationship between Kitsch and Collins' characters kept me marginally entertained at times, but that's it. Avoid! You would not think Stanton made this.

John Carter is a disappointing film only because of how much more could have been expanded upon. That doesn't make it bad, and I expect most audience members to enjoy it right up until the end, but after reflecting upon it, I anticipate most hoping for more. Apart from that, it's an action-packed film that is absolutely stunning to look at that contains mediocre performances and needed another 30 minutes of running time.

A good vehicle for Stanton to prove his nice storytelling -- he actually uses some tricks seen in his features --, but it seems we have seen this kind of epic escapism dozens of times before, in great and worthless features. No novelty, however it's clearly part of something created before of these sagas we've seen over the years -- there is a naive but fresh mixture of western, sci-fi and fantasy. The couple is a less talented Sawyer-Kate type. And the finale is totally there-is-more-coming.

At its best, JOHN CARTER is delightful, and at its worst, it's more "off" than bad--but it isn't at its best quite enough. The script is a bit murky and decidedly uneven, and the directing is inconsistent, being flat at some points and immensely inventive at others. The action scenes are the highlight, but it also looks great, boasts a lovely score, good music, and some solid acting: Taylor Kitsch is just fine in the lead, but Willem Dafoe--and the alien bulldog-thing--steal the show.

It's fantasy/sci-fi adventure fun with an undercurrent of lightheartedness to help keep the movie fun throughout a few of the overlong moments. Despite moments that feel too kiddy or cheesy the movie works, if not in a stellar way, and is a worthy beginning of what surely will be a series of movies.

Liked the concept and liked the execution of the film (for the most part). Some weak parts, (character development was alright but could have been more for a 2 hour film) and the ending felt a little bit rushed. All in all, entertaining film that kept me engaged for the most part.

If you, like me, are a lover of big bombastic fantasy adventure flicks, this mostly hits the spot for a fun Saturday matinee screening, despite some occasional cheesiness and clunky exposition on par with anything in the Star Wars prequels. Lynn Collins actually surpasses the titular character as the Princess of Mars, which is cool since women in these sorts of movies can often feel shallowly-sketched and only put in there out of marketing necessity.

A turd that would have been improved infinitely by a less trite script and more charismatic leads. They're delivering clunker-pieces of dialogue uselessly, both as bland as the action around them. The creature animation is cool, however.

If you're looking for something that looks great on the big screen and will give you plenty to feast your eyes on, then this will not disappoint. The visuals alone give it a pass grade and im always generous to films that try and transport you to another world, after safe house this almost seems like a cinema masterpiece. Sadly plot and characters are both generic and underdeveloped, and the whole thing remains a bit of a blur with not enough time spent making me actually care what happens.

Went into the movie with low expectations, wasn't surprised when it looked like just another Sci-Fi movie at the start. And then things changed, got really interesting in the middle and by the end I was left with a smile on my face; wanting more. Great CG, good story, but a surprisingly great ending. A must-see for any Sci-Fi fan.
