A very well told and original anti war movie, that had many moments of tension. Loved the black and white reality to the colorful dreams and flashbacks. Well acted as well andf was very surprised to see Donald Sutherland in this. This is a must watch and I know I will probably watch it again. A bit sad and depressing though.

Novel's way better. There's just way too many things wrong with the film adaptation, from the very questionable acting to some of the stylistic choices. Some scenes are extremely powerful, but most aren't. Watch Metallica's "One" video, it has most of the good scenes, and read the book... It really is terrific.

The themes are heavy handed and obvious, the writing isn't very good and the acting is subpar. Interesting idea but it wasn't executed as well as it could've been. Some powerful scenes but not my kind of movie honestly. And it's just pretty boring most of the time.

"A story like this demands the lightest touch given its ultimately heavy subject matter, but this movie gives a new meaning to the words preachy and heavy-handed dramatizing, spelling everything out over and over and letting the actor get too melodramatic. It's a tribute to the terrible existential despair of the story that despite all of this, some emotion and thought does come through despite the bad direction."

No limbs and no face or hearing, but the rest of him is oddly unscarred? "Young men don't have homes, son, that's why they must go out and kill each other" is not an absurdist joke but a line spoken seriously in this bleak drama. The plausibility issues and mostly crude dialogue really bring down the daring concept and otherwise imaginative execution. I found the autobiographical The Diving Bell and the Butterfly to be a better, more moving and compelling realization of a similar premise.

An incredible anti war movie with a magnificent script. It's told through the intermittent flashbacks of a wounded soldier and the integration of the two, both visually and thematically is stunning. While the movie is very powerful and sad it manages use light moments to keep from becoming overbearing.

An intriguing and horrifying premise, greatly marred by some terrible acting. Granted, this is a tough role to play, especially the voice-over, but Bottoms does a lousy job with it. The woman who plays his sweetheart is pretty bad, too. This was the only directing attempt by Trumbo, a noted screenwriter. It just goes to show that writing and directing are entirely different talents. Although to be honest, the writing was occasionally spotty, too. Still, it is an unusual and engaging work.
