Bourgeois overindulgence triggers Chabrol's aesthetically expansive Just Before Nightfall, an exploration of an adulterous husband's post-murder guilt and shame that uses images so brilliantly to illustrate and accentuate its leads psychological dilemma that it might virtually shame any similar work. Aided by Michel Bouquet's dramatically intense performance and an astute cinematographer, Chabrol enhances a straightforward plot so excellently as to prove his value as an artistic filmmaker.

dull, too long

One of Chabrol's most thought-provoking, morally difficult, and generally masterful suspense/dramas, and that is saying something because so many of his movies have these qualities.

Very different point of view for a drama/crime movie. Great.
