Bastardizes one of the great moments in literature, but it manages to retain its mysterious atmosphere.

Another difficult film to rate--by no standard can it be considered a good film, but it's got atmosphere in spades, and it certainly sticks with you. Apparently Durrell had reservations about making a movie of his novel, and there is no better summation of the result than Leslie Halliwell's in his Film Guide: "The author feared a sort of 'Peyton Place' with camels, and got it."
