Summary: Walter Goodfellow (Atkinson) is the well-meaning vicar of the parish of Little Wallop. So obsessed with writing the perfect sermon, he's oblivious to his wife Gloria's (Thomas) dalliance with her brash golf instructor Lance (Swayze), has trouble keeping track of his daughter Holly's parade of new boyfriends, and neglects his young son Petey. Enter the charming and discreet new housekeeper Grace (Smith), the answer to the family's prayers. Problems solved only lead to more problems created in this story of good intentions run amok. Had great potential, and was certainly funny at times, but seemed lacking in depth and cohesion.

I'm not sure this film knows what it wants to be. I get the dark comedic side of the whole thing, but I was lost by what seemed was the serious point it was trying to make about God's grace. The performances were fun, and Atkinson in particular did a nice job, but I just feel like this is one of those admirable failures, a film you'd like to succeed, but doesn't have a consistent tone to carry throughout the film.

Just doesn't do enough. Its a dark british comedy that isn't in particular that funny or engaging. Maggie Smith and Rowan Atkinson are the strongest performers but I think what ruined it for me was Patrick Swayze literally ruining every scene he was in.

This movie actually manages to just dribble away into nothing; like it was meant to be another hour longer but they ran out of money and needed to wrap it up quickly. A good cast counts for something, though.

The darkness is welcome, and there's a lot to like here -- on the other hand, of course, there's a lot to dislike, and while Maggie Smith and Kristen Scott Thomas provide enough entertainment in their own right, the rest of the cast (and the script as a whole) can't really bring the magic.

The story is surprisingly light considering the subject matter. Rowan Atkinson is the lovable preacher, and his bored wife is looking to escape. The daughter is out of control. Then comes the crazy old housekeeper who transforms their lives for the better, but unfortunately by means of murder. Despite the gruesome acts, the story on the surface looks like all is innocent and sweet. Plot holes galore, but silly fun, if you can overlook the horrific realities. Great last scene laugh.

Keeping Mum is a hilarious and quirky comedy with a lot of heart. The entire cast gives wonderful performances, especially those that aren't usually comedic actors, such as Patrick Swayze, and above all, Maggie Smith. Really good!

Not nearly as awful as I expected. It's been forced upon me a couple of times now, and it's more than held my attention, and occasionaly brought a smile with its odd flash of dark humour.
