You've decided to remember Kill Bill: Volume 1 for later. You can see all your remembered films here.
Summary: The Bride wakes up after a long coma. The baby that she carried before entering the coma is gone. The only thing on her mind is to have revenge on the assassination team that betrayed her - a team she was once part of.
Even if you lived under a rock, in the Rocky Mountains, you will have still heard about Kill Bill. It introduces us to the characters and their various motives without coming off as one-long exposition. Remarkably, even though I didn't find The Bride a likeable character, I was still rooting for her. It's very Tarintino, and it's very enjoyable.
Tarantino is back with a vengeance. The first of two volumes of what originally was supposed to be a single film. Tarantino joyfully and masterfully immerses the audience in the different styles and ultraviolence of the Asian cinema he loves so much, even using anime for one backstory sequence, with some spaghetti western and '70s TV added for spice. His trademark sharp dialogue is not as plentiful as in the past, but what's here is layered, sometimes moving, and often humorous.
So much more than an homage to Tarantino's beloved B-movies: Kill Bill is really a deconstruction of the movie-making process; rather than drawing the attention of its audience to the story, as most films do, its goal is to make the audience aware that they're watching a film. There is a subtle "language" of cinema that films have to obey; otherwise, the audience feel that something is off. Kill Bill deliberately forsakes that language, reminding us that cinema is only a form of representation.
Essentially one movie as the credits at the end of Volume 2 like to point out. My opinion of these have changed with each viewing. Volume 1 is the more stylish action homage while Volume 2 concentrates on the characters to propel the story. Supported by Uma Thurman being a badass and sublime music choices. Back to back is the best way to experience the bride's revenge tale.
