Summary: When a husband and wife witness a shakedown, they discover that the Witness Protection Program is no match for a pair of ruthless killers who want them dead. [Originally released in 2008]
Sad to see such an incredible cast offer up so many uninspired performances in this serviceable but cliche-ridden thriller. Rourke is just ok, but the real reason to see this is Joseph Gordon-Levitt's jittery take on motormouth killer Richie Nix. He steals every scene he's in.
Great film: strong character, good motivations, interesting situations, fitting wrap-up. My only complaint wasn't it didn't establish a clear conflict until about half-way through the film.
A slow story that builds very poorly. If you want to see a mystery for motivations this is the film to watch, but who really wants to wait till the end of the film to realize that everything he did that was stupid was actually smart?
There is one reason I was able to make it through this whole film without just getting up and turning it off. That was the dynamic between Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Mickey Rourke. Levitt was awesome, he played the character they way he was meant to be played. Neither Diane Lane of Thomas Jane did anything to really impress me. Not a bad storyline, one that has been done numerous times, but this one jumped out at me because Joseph Gordon-Levitt is so good at what he does.
It might have been actually a good movie if they hadn't lost all the plausibility of the story in the mid-way. A bit of this (indian lore) a bit of that (a couple with mid-life crisis), it is basically a marital problems movie with some hitmen in it. Gordon-Levitt excels in his trigger-happy, maddeningly annoying Richie character and Rourke is a natural born hitman anyway. So it is not a total failure, just not very good.
This is a film you should only watch if you want to pass the time and watch a run of the mill thriller. Rourke is ok, but Joseph Gordon Levitt is just not very good here. He plays a dumb sadistic hillbilly who's a two-bit thief, and the character is written as such. It's absolutely nothing new, and even though it's definitely different from the roles he usually chooses, he just doesn't pull it off. The lines come off as really cliche from him, and he doesn't use his talent at all. Mediocre.
90 minutes is just about right for this mediocre thriller. While the storyline has been done many times before, it is Rourke and JGL that keep it interesting. JGL is over the top, but still fun to watch.
Both Rourke and Joseph Gordon-Levitt offer fantastic performances that absolutely make this movie. Honestly if it wasn't for them this would be a completely generic thriller. The two protagonists of the film, however, a far more lackluster. While I think Thomas Jane and Diane Lane are both fine actors their roles simply pale in comparison to the two hitmen. As such, every scene that focuses on them feels relatively drab. Killshot is a decent thriller though, just not great.
'Killshot' is consistently interesting and also consistently messy. It has a top-notch cast and a respected director at the helm, but the troubled production doesn't allow for a clear vision. The film doesn't know whether to follow the protagonists or the villains. The performances are decent, although Gordon-Levitt veers a bit over the top. By its finish, the movie is merely okay, better than expected, but not as good as it could be--it feels exactly like a made-for-cable thriller.
Rourke and Gordon-Lewitt deliver great performances to an original story but the good guys aren't quite as good. Madden's directing also falls apart a bit halfway through.
Starts off as a decent thriller but falls apart as the storylines begin to merge. Gordon-Levitt is terrible, Rourke is OK, but to my surprise the best performances come from Lane and Jane. The several cuts and re-shoots show.
Seems like they couldn't really decide if the movie should focus on the good guys or on the bad guys. I just wish they had shown more of Rourke and Gordon-Levitt instead of the boring married couple.
The acting is good throughout the movie, at least from the main four characters. Unfortunately towards the end they start to focus a little too much on the Lane/Jane's storyline instead of the more interesting storyline with Gordon-Leviitt/Rourke. This film probably won't knock your socks off, but it's a decent story that's not a terrible way to spend 90 minutes.
