It's absolutely shocking that they were able to pull off these special effects back in 1933; it's recommended watching just for its historical significance. The theory that there is a subtext about slavery is pretty mind-boggling to me. It loses points for the herbivorous Brontasaurus eating a human.

The blatant misogyny and racism really got on my nerves. The fight scenes are repetitive, the special effects are laughable, and the love story is complete crap. Yes, women love it when you say things like "Women can't help being a bother. I guess they're made that way." Just confess your love and all is well. Fast forward to them kissing. Really? What a joke. The film moves so quickly that there was no time to empathize and even like the characters. The characters were just boring. Pass.

The original monster movie might be dated but can still charm the audience with a sympathetic main character and with the famous end scene on top of Empire State Building. If find it impossible to dislike this film, which must have been nearly impossible effort to film on it's creation time.

It has several great parts, but let's be honest for a second. As good and important as this was when it came out, it is really, really dated today.
