The camera did some stuff and Fonda did some stuff and I watched this stuff. It's pretty good, the music makes everything in this much more scary than it is. Or I'm probably bad at reading scenes.

Impressive. I was both scared and intrigued by the weirdly voyeuristic camera that seemed to float, weave and place itself (more than it seemed to be placed) in strange places and from odd vantage points. "Klute" is a classic idiosyncratic 70s genre movie that plays with conventions - and does so with great stylistic flair. Sutherland and Fonda in particular were as impressive as one would expect.

Klute is thankfully devoid of most detective film cliches, but it is nonetheless a pretty tepid example of the genre. It's acted and filmed well, and Fonda has never been so alluring, so there are definitely reasons to watch it. The story just ultimately doesn't go anywhere all that interesting.

Unless you are an early-00s indie girl, only Jane Fonda can pull off that haircut. Also, I realize this is a dumb opinion, but growing up, I always knew Jane Fonda the Celebrity. I didn't realize how good of an actress she was in her heyday.

I've been nodding off during films a lot lately. With Klute I had to remind myself to blink. Like Five Easy Pieces, it has that subtle existentialism; quiet yet constantly screaming. Relentlessly stylish and idiosyncratic with a creepily voyeuristic camera.

Chillingly suspenseful in its exploration of a seedy New York underbelly rife with perversion. In the face of a slew of great performances by Fonda, Sutherland, and Schieder, the real star is Gordon Willis's cinematography. By day, his New York City is classy and vibrant, but by night, the blackness swallows up the utopian vision, leaving merely a few contours to define this twisted world of pimps, junkies, and perverts. This is a classic 70s thriller.

Less of a mystery [plot points could hardly be more obvious], more of a character study / showcase for Jane Fonda & those astounding feats of Gordon Willis cinematography. Enough for me. The music that comes in on the more sinister scenes deserves mention, as well.

Ticks a few boxes for me, such as a missing person conspiracy, sneaky surveillance, and treating the vocation of prostitution seriously. The back of the DVD really raved about Fonda and they weren't kidding, she is stunning in this, but everyone really is because of the strength of the script. The plot moves about ordinarily enough, but becomes more and more sinister towards the end, helped by some smart cinematography from the shadowey Gordon Willis.

They simply don't make them like this anymore. Sutherland and Fonda are terrific. Pakula's direction is top-notch - along with Hal Ashby, the 70's most underrated director - the score is creepy and the cinematography by Gordon Willis is stunning. If you have an appreciation for the American cinema of the 70's the way I do, I think it would be hard not to love this film. (two times)

An original '70s take on the suspense genre with interesting shots, great transitions, and strong chemistry between its leads. "What I would really like to do is be faceless, and bodiless, and be left alone."

A great example of 1970's paranoia thrillers, as it mines the theme for all the obstacles and character traits that come with it. If I have one complaint about the picture, it is that Pakula more interested in the nuance of the oppressive mood as opposed to the character development. You spend more time observing these characters, as opposed to empathizing with them. But then, given the paranoia theme, maybe that's the point? As an aside, I can see why this is a favorite of David Fincher.

Rewatched. Klute did for NYC what Altman's The Long Goodbye did for Los Angeles. Fonda is outstanding in a challenging role and Sutherland, while more archetype than person, is very charismatic. The movie is brilliantly shot - the scene on the roof is as creepy as it gets. And the soundtrack is great too. Mostly though just a reminder of how miserable one can be to go it alone in a city that cheerfully uses human folly and failure to garnish its own sense of character.

Klute is about trauma; recognizing, confronting, and growing out of it. At least that's what Fonda's character's arc is. Klute is a bit of an enigma in that it hides that meat under trappings of a neo-noir thriller. Those elements aren't insignificant, but they play second banana to Bree Daniels. The other major element is the stylish cinematography of Gordon Willis. Willis' camera captures the New York of the 70s and influenced thousands with the look and tone; style & grit in a single frame.

Jane Fonda's performance is quite possibly the best I've ever witnessed. Try and dwell on her acting in the psychiatrist scenes, where she mostly has monologues. It is INCREDIBLY natural, I was awestruck. Sutherland is always good, and it has a decent thrill to it, but not up there among the best 70's-thrillers. A bit too simple, maybe? Still - a great watch.

A murder mystery where you know who the killer is from the first scene; but with Gordon Willis' glorious voyeuristic cinematography, disturbing music and a creepy subject, the plot points hardly seem to matter. It suffers when it falls into its genre conventions, which is thankfully not all that often.

A decent suspense-thriller that concentrates more on the characters than the "Murder She Wrote"-style plot. (The movie throws you by naming it after a mostly-vanilla rookie detective instead of its dominant character, expertly played by Fonda.) Even with all the characterization, there are still some notable gaps, but it's still a good watch if you enjoy a 70s neo-noir.

Fonda is really wonderful in the role that really established her career. It's not the first role to break her out of her Euro-sex-kitten image (she'd done the remarkable "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" a couple of years earlier), but it's such a fabulous role for what she does so well that the film just belongs to her. To his credit, Sutherland, really the bigger star coming off "M*A*S*H", just cedes ground to her and is really quite wonderful himself.

An enjoyable neo-noir displaying the "New Hollywood" know-how, intelligence and flair also present in Pakula's political thrillers, but with nothing really standing out. The plot is ho-hum, the superb Sutherland and Scheider aren't given interesting characters to work with, and I think both Fonda and the writers make a valiant effort to breathe realism and depth into her prostitute character, but don't entirely succeed. It's still very well executed and certainly worth watching.

Jane Fonda's performance in Klute is awesome, but not for the same reasons as we're normally awed by performances. She doesn't have big, tearful breakdowns or fiery cross-examinations. She simply interacts, tries to figure out her own feelings and lack thereof, and experiences them. She makes all the right choices, from the workings of her walk and her vocal nuances to the infiltration of the girl's rampant mind. It's an uncommonly exceptional performance.

I could not follow this very well and got bored. Some stuff was very heavy handed (Jane Fonda's therapy sessions where the obvious is frequently stated, when it is not being awkwardly avoided) but other things were never explained (are those therapy sessions from before, during, or after the action, or all they all excerpts from the same session?)

An excellent atmospheric thriller with an ever teetering hint of paranoia. Sutherland's character is the cold and collected - and a tad sociopathic - macho with enviable amounts of self-control and equanimity. Jane Fonda plays the femme fatale, who at one time is in full control of the situation, at another she's on the verge of a panic breakdown. Great flick, awesome pace and atmosphere.

Klute is a film that portends to be a suspenseful Neo-Noir mystery, but in reality is more of a dry character study. A very technically proficient film, that's acted wonderfully. Unfortunately all of it somewhat wasted on a rather thin screenplay. Still, I'd say it's worth seeing. It pretty effectively lays the groundwork for what Pakula would go on to do in the far superior The Parallax View and All The President's Men.

I don't understand the point of revealing the stalker way before the film ended. IMO, that to so much away from what this film could have been. Pakula does a good job of occasionally setting up a menacing mood and I thought Fonda was pretty good, but I was disappointed with the plot. It just seemed like it could have been a lot more thrilling. Kind of reminded me of Coppola's The Conversation which I also found very disappointing.

Mildly interesting plot, with some up-to-date visual touches. But the reason to see this is Jane Fonda: she is extraordinary. Pauline Kael: "Jane Fonda in possibly her finest dramatic performance, as Bree, an intelligent, high-bracket call girl [...] Fonda is very exciting to watch: the closest closeup never reveals a false thought and, seen on the movie streets a block away, she's Bree, not Jane Fonda, walking toward us."

Its plotted revelations are ultimately slight, but absolutely unimportant in the shadows of Gordon Willis's voyeurism, and that dreadful piano-and-vocal refrain, and Fonda's nervy angst. The anxiety creeps, almost unbearable. It's easy to imagine this film's influence on David Fincher.

I appreciated the visual sensibility, where darkness and shadow dominate the lives of these people once night falls. Life in the daylight seems, then, merely a veneer for the truth of these characters. The film stumbles a few times when it gets caught up in its genre conventions, none more significant than the romance that develops. But overall, an effective thriller that begins to work territory that Coppola will pick up and improve upon in The Conversation a few years later.

A stand out example of that seedy 70s style mystery. Fonda is great. I wish there was more natural suspense. Things move at their own pace, the plot is ultimately thin, and almost inconsequential. I liked it, but wanted something more.

Klute oozes 1970s New York with all its seediness and shadows. Aesthetically, the film is glorious, and then you add Fonda completely dominating the screen with her vulnerability under immense sass and power. The thriller aspect plays second fiddle to complex relationship between the two leads. A great example of New Hollywood.
