It may not be a classic, but it is surprisingly good. Dietrich has never looked more beautiful in a non-Sternberg film, and the fact that she and Donat are cool, ironic actors oddly generates a good deal of heat. The scenes of the Russian revolution are atmospheric and evocative, and seems fresh because they are conceived by a European auteur who is not a prisoner of the Hollywood studio style.
