Summary: Po the Panda is the laziest animals in all of the Valley of Peace, but unwittingly becomes the chosen one when enemies threaten their way of life.
Its a kids film, nothing but and entertaining for it. The story ain't especially new and if you don't like Jack Black take about 50 off this score, but its still likable and fairly inoffensive. My one gripe is that the Furious Five (M CCCCCs... sorry) don't get enough time talking. This is strange given the calibre of person they got for the roles. (Jackie Chan can speak English folks) And finally, Lovejoy! is in it.
It's no instant classic by any stretch and it falls leagues short of Toy Story, The Incredibles, and Ratatouille, but compared to Dreamworks' recent films (Shrek 3, Shark Tale, Bee Movie), it's a damn masterpiece. It isn't clogged with ANY annoying pop culture references, and although a couple celebrity voices awkwardly stick out, Jack Black actually does a funny job. The infinite potential of animation is taken advantage of to produce some pretty cool fight scenes.
While Kung Fu Panda fails to cash in on some of its potential, it prooves to be very enjoyable. A lack of pop culture in a film shouldn't be a refreshing change, but this is one individual to push out the boat a little for creative film making. The casting sounds good from the off, fitting the wacky styling of the film. Coupled with some good martial arts hommages, good action scenes and some imput of humour, it's one of the proportionally few CGI films of recent years worthy of special note.
Am I the only one who don't really think Jack Black is a hit as a panda? I don't know, but I loved other stars like Woody Allen in Antz or wasn't it Mike Myers as Shrek. He's too over-voiced in this film, and it's saved by the cool old-school cartoonish style and the very black humor. I laughed a lot, so can't complain too much, can I?
Great fights, a decent story, and not one pop culture reference? Dreamworks got it right this time! Most of the Furious 5's voice actors were wasted, though...
Fun movie. It tells its story well, but the best parts are the characters and the fun visual manner in which the story plays out. There are some great gags here and it is definitely something that parents can watch with their children and thoroughly enjoy.
The storytelling is as by-the-numbers as it gets, but it does boast a visual sense that is smoothly well-realized, generally engaging, and, at times, very striking. In particular, the sequences involving the elaborate prison created for the villainous Tai Lung and his escape from his incarceration are things of dark beauty. The film still feels like partially fulfilled possibility than something that truly takes advantage of the open frontier of the animation form.
