The merits of this film lie largely in its attitude. The style is as reckless as its protagonist, whose only passions in life are jazz, sun, sex and crime. The soundtrack booms with jazz, the camera whips around untethered, often reaching up towards the sun. Akira is not to be pitied or sympathized with, although his rebellion is not entirely groundless. Kurahara isn't asking terribly deep questions here, but he does utilize filmic technique beautifully to capture a sense of dizzy frustration.

Nice, jazzy soundtrack and some good camera work. An interesting Japanese take on the "youth picture". Frenetic, and exciting. Sometimes referred to as a Japanese Breathless, The Warped Ones, though first marketed in the US as a sexploitation flick, was one of the high points of the Japanese New Wave.
